Umm...because they've taken a vow that basically symbolizes that they are married to God. And, some nuns have had sex - before they became nuns. This can happen if a woman is widowed and then joins a convent.

Nuns have chosen to take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. Chastity vows mean chastity within one's station in life. As brides of Christ, a nun cannot have sexual relations outside of their marriage. Their husband is Jesus Christ, who is in Heaven, thus a nun cannot have sex because her husband does not have a corporeal body and having sex with a human male would break her vow of chastity and be no different than adultery.

The vows nuns take are voluntary. Nobody holds a gun to their head and forces them to take these vows. The process of becoming a nun takes several years, much discernment and study, and a lot of soul searching. These women understand what they are getting into. They also understand that it is a two way door. No nun is forced to stay in the convent should she discover that, after all, the religious life is not the right calling for her.

because part of becoming a Nun is taking vows. I believe that Nuns take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Let's go over those.

Poverty: A nun will take a vow of poverty. This means that she will not accumulate material possessions more than what is absolutely necessary for survival. Material possessions can claim our hearts and minds and distract us from service to our Lord.

Chastity: No intimate relationships with the opposite sex. Our ability to procreate--create life, is the greatest gift the Lord has given us as human beings. Giving this gift up in sacrifice to the service of our Lord is probably the ultimate act of submission to the will of the Lord.

Obedience: This means that the nun will be obedient to those who have been placed in positions of responsibility over her. This is essential if we are to have an organized effort to work for the Lord. No obedience to the leaders would mean chaos would rule in our work for the Lord.

I think I've hit the high points. Hope this helps.

There are no nuns in Islam. All religious figures, male or female, are allowed to marry and have children. It's a part of God's mercy to mankind.

I'm not sure why Nuns can't have "sex", and I think you mean after marriage, right?

My understanding is that when a Nun takes her vows, she becomes a Bride of Christ. Therefore, she is a married woman, in a manner of speaking, and very much in her heart, soul, and devotion. Just as in "regular" marriage vows, she "forsakes all others."

She takes these vows very seriously, and commits her life and her life's work to Christ, putting the spiritual commune of marriage above all physical unions.

It's not so much that she "can't" have sex, which involves another human partner...it's that she chooses to experience love on a spiritual, rather than physical level. To do otherwise, would be to break her vows.

If you want the best answer, you should call your local Catholic church, and inquire about the religion.

Because nuns are not married to a human man so that means they can't have sex and one of God's commandments is not to have sex until marriage.!!!

They can have sex, the equipment is still there.
It is just that they don't because of the religious commitments they make when they become nuns.

Nuns (and by the same token, monks) have devoted themselves to their faith, and believe that part of being pure and becoming closer to God is to abstain from sex. They take vows to that effect when they are confirmed.

They made a vow to serve god. It is a weird way to put it but it is kind of (for lack of a better term) being married to the holy spirit. If they have sex it would be like committing adultery. It is more complicated than that but I would be here all night.

They would if I had my way about it. With me. I guess that's why they're called nuns, cuz they don't get none!
