If the swings are out of control to the point where tehy are wrecking your life then you need help, and now. If you do turn out to have bipolar disorder, then the available drugs are very effective, and you can get your life back (I owe mine to lamotrigine and olanzapine).
A word of warning: if your doctor diagnoses depression and prescribes an antidepressant, be very careful. Antidepressants without a mood stabiliser can be very dangerous for someone with bipolar.
You should try to keep a mood diary for a little while, and write down what you feel and when. This will help the doctor to understand what is going on.

WOW, I just went to the doctor Wednesday with this exact problem. I explained it to him exactly like you are explaining it. I feel for you. Please get help. the fact that you are able to recognize these symptoms means that you are really looking for help.
I did my homework and talked to a couple different friendsand two of my sisters and I decided that prozac was the best choice. the doctor gave me prozac and just knowing that relief is close by makes me feel so much better. I have only been taking it for three days but I swear that I feel a little better already.
I feel so bad for you because I know how awful it makes you feel to have these mood swings.
I hope you are able to get some help. if you need someone to talk to please feel free to e-mail me.

See a doctor. You may have bipolar illness or another type of biochemical imbalance that can be helped with medicine. If you are female and having monthly cycles, this may also have something to do with the hormones which a doctor can help with also. Don't wait as you you want to enjoy and look forward to each day of your life.

Good physical & mental excercise. Join a gym, or take up a sport. Start reading some short stories collections or design a website or keep a diary or play chess . And buy a bottle of Omega3, take one or two of those a day. Helps even out moods with many people.(it did for me)

Go to a reputable health food centre, give them your details, they'll advise you on supplements. Exercise is very important and a good balanced diet essential.

As everyone is saying, you really do need to visit your doctor -- you may not be bi-polar, but there could be something going on. I have really, really bad anxiety and being prescribed meds practically saved me. I am sure the right meds will help you too.

you could ask GP to ref you, for an assessment with mental health team - to see if you suffer from bi-polar disorder? or perhaps you are very unsettled at the moment?
