Everyone so far is right. More bad news. If your computer was made to operate WIN98SE, it is not fast or big enough to operate XP. And you might as well forget about "borrowing " a copy of XP because MS will be checking with each update whether or not each copy is legal before downloading. That is the primary reason they just dropped security support on 2000, ME, 98, and 95. They do not have that checkup ability with those platforms. Are you beginning to see why so many of us are trying to get away from anything Micro-snot?

Your PC with Windows 98 may not be able to support WindowsXP. Check the specifications of your PC against those required for XP.
I have a Pentium III in the closet and was told it would so much to update it, that it would make better sense to get a new one. You can get a new PC for $299 with WindowsXP installed. Try Dell or HP. You may hit it on a day when they offer free shipping. That's how I got mine. I doubt you will be able to download WinXP anywhere at no cost.

first note taht you can't uninstall windows 98 wiothout affecting other OS installed in your system. If you don't want the win98 files, just format the particluar drive. But the boot menu will remains displaying both OSs. Don't format, if the boot menu installed in the Windows 98 drive. For SP2, Download it from windows 98 or windows 2000. MS website will not validate 98 and 2000 systems. (the website will ask for the validation, but it will succeed and you can download). ask me if you want to know more.

You can't download a whole operating system, especially not for free. You are either going to have to purchase it or borrow the disc from someone.
