I broke up with my ex about a month and a half ago. He was a total jerk when we were together, he neglected me all the time and pretty much took me for granted so I called it off. We had been together for a little over a year, and I told him to give me my space and pretty much to leave me the hell alone after I broke up with him.
He keeps " trying to be my friend" and I told him no thanks. Majority of my male friends keep telling me he is trying to get back with me and to avoid his phone calles, but I dont know if he really wants to be friends or is just using " the friendship as an excuse to stay in my life. What do you guys think? Do guys really offer to be their exs friend after she dumped them with an attempt to get back together. I dont get it? I dont plan on talking to him I just want to know. Thanks

There's a lot of it about! Self centred jerks as you've described usually need a victim they can take for granted as a kind of "prop". They don't make any better "friends" than they do boy-friends, because they generally aren't really capable of caring about somebody else anyway. But, because they basically have dependant personalities, they will always try to crawl back into a relationship they've abused, because (a) they don't feel confident about getting another one (b) it seems easier than finding and courting someone else (c) they need the support (though they'd never admit to it and will abuse it as soon as they feel safe again). I'd say he is just "usng the excuse", as you say. And while he's hanging around it will diminish your possibilities with others; which I suspect he knows unconsciously as a manipulator. By the way, despite their front, most men are basically more emotionally fragile than women - partly because they won't confront it. That's why so many need women as walking sticks. Good luck girl.

Sassy chic: Too bad the romance spoiled ! I would tell him once and for all to hit the bricks. You already reached the point with him that you have had enough. This " I want to be your friend " crap is just that - CRAP !!! When he was your lover he treated you like vomit ... and as only, your "friend" ... what would he treat you like then ??? !!! I couldn't tolerate knowing the girl I once loved and is no longer with me being "my friend" - not in a billion years - no way !!! He had his "kick" at the proverbial "can", so, now, dump him and have nothing to do with him - unless you like his abuse. Remember; there are guys out there, who won't treat you the way he had !!! You sound pretty smart so you must feel like the guy is trying to keep in touch to maybe mend things up between you too if you do want to be friends maybe find another guy first and see if he is still interested in staying friends just a thought. He sounds like
a dog missing his bone oh well he treats you like crap he doesn't deserve any treats hahaha.

I don't think he wants to be your friend, but wants to work his way back into getting intimate with you again. If he was really into you, it just doesn't make sense how he could settle for just being friends.
