Go to Insert and select symbol. You can then select your choice of letter with umlaut and even choose a shortcut for you to use next time on your keyboard if you type German a lot. However, I find it easier to press Control + Shift + Colon and then the letter in question. It takes some practice, but it soon becomes second nature.

You can change to different keyboards by going into Control Panel and selecting Regional & Language options. I put a link below for the full instructions. I'm assuming it's Windows you're using. If you're on a Mac, there's instructions for that on the link too. Good luck

At work I use the "Insert Symbols" on the option bar.
In Yahoo Q/A - I go to the German Yahoo Clever and
"spell check". Everything you type there in your answers
with an ae, oe ue or ss is corrected to the right spelling.
I know, not a big help - but a little bit - maybe?

Well, you just go to Insert, then Symbols on the drop-down menu. Keep scrolling, until you come to the vowel section with As and Us etc. with the umlaut. Double-click to insert.

The umlaut just means that the vowel it's over has an "e" after it. So when writing an umlauted word, just spell it oe, ue, or ae (i.e., "koenig" for k(o-umlaut)***; "gaerten" for g(a-umlaut)rten, etc)

Suppose you want to type ä, using Microsoft Word as your email editor.
Hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys while pressing the semicolon/colon key. Then release all 3 keys and type a. (Type o or u if you want to create ö or ü.)
For the capital letter Ä, release the semicolon/colon key only and keep Ctrl and Shift depressed while you type a.
You get used to it quickly. :-)
