Depends on what you want really.

For cameras then rechargables last longer AND can be recharged. otherwise Lithium is best, followed by alkaline.

For torches, alkaline or rechargable (NiMH) - the one advantage with alkaline is that you get some warning before they go flat (get dimmer), a rechargable goes from almost fully bright to dead in about 5 seconds. Depends on your application!!

Remote controls etc can work quite well the bog standard batteries - alkalines are a bit overkill.

Please NEVER use rechargable batteries for smoke detectors - rechargable batteries go flat on their own after anything from a few weeks (NiMh in hot climate) to a few months (NiCad in cold climate). either use Alkaline OR Lithium.

As for brands, Energizer, Duracell are good makes, things like "Goldstar / FabUltraPower, heavydutymax" and other such "naff brand" found on the market for 50p per card are best avoided - or just used to power remote controls which only need cheap batteries.

Hope that helps a little.

Most of the big name brand batteries are better then the no name batteries. There are some small companies that make decent batteries. There are some companies that make batteries that are sold in dollar stores the name and design on the battery resembles big brand name batteries. You can tell that they weigh a lot less then the good batteries, they don't work as well and they corrode easily and cam damage your electronics. If you are talking about the batteries used in cell phones and laptop computers there are several different kinds. the 3 most popular are nickle cadmium, nickle metal hydride and lithium ion. Lithium ion is usually the. If you work in temperature extremes nickle cadmium is probably better. It is best to drain the batteries as much as possible through regular use before recharging even though some people will tell you it's not necessary.

You have to pick the right battery for the right use. In a digital camera, rechargables make the most sense, but if you have to use disposable batteries, they should be lithium (Energizer Lithium), not alkaline. For your CD player, regular alkalines are fine. Consumer Reports put Kirkland batteries (sold at Costco in 48 packs) on the top of its regular alkaline list, followed by Duracell and RiteAid, whose batteries performed as well but cost a lot more. Energizer alkalines were rated less highly. For premium alkalines (Energizer Titanium or Duracell Ultra) performance was pretty equal and maybe slightly above the regular alkalines, but they didn't really recommend using these in things like CD players because of the cost. Panasonic batteries were at the bottom of the performance list. This is based on information in the November 2006 Consumer Reports. Personally, I use the Kirkland batteries and am quite happy with both performance and cost.

For general uses like radios any common carbon batteries are fine. For real work you need DURACELL, I've found they really do last longer. I work with two way radios and regular batteries and other brands just don't last as well.

Also cameras and video equipment need special batteries too. As do Ipods and such.

Nickle metal hydride NiMH, rechargeable with a quick charger are the best. last as long or longer than alkalines and are rechargeable, in about5 15 mins. What more could you ask for. but they don't work in all devices, because there V is 1.2 volts fully charged, instead of 1.5. if 1.5 is needed get nicads, nickle Cadmium

Energizer e2 Lithium batteries are the bomb for digital cameras. I don't know about other electronic devices, but they really do last longer in cameras.
