My dog got to come home today from the vet. He is on his 5th day of this terrible disease. He is still a little lethargic. He ate some chicken and rice about noon and he wont eat anymore. The vet gave me nutri-cal and amoxicillin. I have force down about 4 syringes of chicken broth. Is this good for him and what else can I do? Is it normal to still be so lethargic? He drank water this morning and about noon. But nothing since. He is 9 lbs and 6 mo old. How much water does he need before I need to be concerned? Thank You.

Parvo strips the lining from the intenstinal tract allowing fecal matter to "soak" through the intestines into the bloodstream. The dog's body becomes "septic" and thus the dog becomes deathly ill.

Keep up the fluids and medications as the doctor prescribed. We also supplemented our dog with Pedialyte (so it got extra electrolytes and minerals from the fluid). We fed her fluids every two hours DAY AND NIGHT for about 10 days. If your dog has already has 5 days of treatment, he may need another 5 or 7 days of treatment from you.

We also tempted our dog to eat more by giving her a "smorgasborg plate" of different kinds of baby food.

You can tell if the dog is hydrated enough by doing a simple skin-pinch test. Pinch the skin on the back of the dog's neck and lift it straight up away from the dog's body. Then let the skin go. If it snaps back into place, the dog has enough fluid. If the skin goes back slowly into place or remains pinched up, it means there isn't enough fluid in the dog's body and you need to add more. Use a turkey baster or needle-less syringe and squirt the water into his mouth if you have to.

Best of luck!

I would suggest you give the pet the non-flavored pediolyte like for babies.Maybe it is having some nausea and this will help settle its stomach, remove the water.Try boiling some chicken ,remove the bones and cut into small pieces and give your pet.It should eat this .If your pet is throwing up,call your vet.Give the pediolyte several times a day, even if you have to force feed it to the pet,but in small amounts with intervals at least 30 minutes to 1 hour apart.Every bit it holds down will help it to recover.Parvo is a very disasterious virus and your pet is very lucky to have made it through this,so I would imagine it will be lethargic for a little while, just continue its meds the vet gave and make sure you get the pediolyte down it so it won't dehydrate.

you need to give him pedylite with a syrings and keep forcing fluids down him, I wouldnt worry if he didnt eat cause fluids is what is the most important right now, With the fluids you need to give it to him every hour untill tomorrow and then every 2 hours so he doesnt get dehydraded,,, I have had 2 pit bulls that got parvo and they were not them old selves agian for about a week or so,,, i would try the BRAT diet with him tomorrow and see if he keeps it down only give him small amounts though but force the fluids down as said above and I hope this helps and good luck this is a very nasty virus and im glad you caught it in time

Parvo is nasty. It would be like you drinking a gallon of Clorox...burns up the insides. It takes more than 5 days to get over this. Keep giving him Nutri-cal (its like a meal itself) + amoxicillin. Try mixing meaty baby food w/rice.
You can give him sugar water w/syringe...just don't let his mouth get dried out. About 9cc every hour. Best of Luck!

FLUID,FLUID,FLUIDS!!! This is a very serious disease. Everything I have read about it says administer ALOT of fluids. Especially to replace potassium and other essential vitamin and minerals.Scrub down the dogs living and play areas with disinfectant because of contamination. Good luck I hope things work out well.

I dealt with my 2 of my canines and it labored, yet particularly. I gave them coconut oil a pair of tablespoon each and every hour or 2 mixed with some drops of eucalyptus oil, tea tree, or oregano.. style it in the previous you supply it on your canines just to make effective its not too notably spiced.. and that i used a plastic syringe to squirt water down their throats to maintain them hydrated.. significant reason they die is from dehydration... Or i heard you grants them oxygen for an hour each and every 4 hours or so.
