I am going to graduate in May with a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy. Very soon after that I am planning on moving to NYC. I am expecting to make at least $30,000 dollars a year once I start my career (just an estimate). I am also planning on living alone and I am wondering if this income is enough for one person to live comfortably in a city such as New York?

You can survive(barely) no problem. $30,000 isn't much for NYC. You will need a roommate if you plan on getting an apartment in Manhattan. A studio in Manhattan alone is $1000 and up. Plus expenses. Everything is more expensive because of the high demand and limited space to live in NYC. If you want a place to yourself you might be able to rent a room for $500 a month. That's tiny though. You have to share everything else (bathroom, kitchen) Just do all your research before you go so you don't wind up selling fruit at intersections to get by. Good Luck!

A Bachelor's in Philosophy and you expect to make $30k your first year out? Sorry, not going to happen. Come may there will be 10,000 people with freshly minted undergrad and grad degrees in hand, all clamoring for a few spots. The best paying will go to those people with connections, from extraordinary schools, with specialized degrees. The rest will temp.

Besides, you never mentioned what industry do you plan on working in. The first thing emplyers will wnat to know is what skills do you have? What experience do you have? Basically, what do you offer that's worth them paying you $2,500 a month?

Even if you did get that, consider taxes (federal, state and NY City) and you'll be lucky to walk away with $1,800 a month. Rent, again if you're lucky, will be at least $1,200 living alone, leaving you with $600 a month for food, clothing, tranportation, entertainment, dating, etc., etc.

Sorry to be such a killjoy, but them's the facts.

I stay in NYC and have my entire existence and that i will assure you that $30,000 isn't adequate to stay at here. Even in the boro's,usual month-to-month hire for a studio condominium is $1200. A one mattress room in a crappy community will run you a minimum of $one million,4 hundred.00. i be attentive to folk who make $a hundred,000 and that they are literally scraping via. in case you get possibly 5 roommates you'll be able to desire to possibly scrape via. yet i might recommend a visit in the previous you made any strikes. Do you have a job lined up already? what style of jobs do you assume to get with a level in philosophy? that's an extremely high priced city and to not harm your thoughts yet residing here on that earnings isn't functional. solid success to you nevertheless.

I'm a PhD student. I lived way out in Forest Hills, Queens had a 1 hour commute each way to school in Manhattan, never went out, seldom bought new clothes, and slept on a futon in a roach infested studio apartement for $900 a month. It cost me $27,000 to live that life for a year.

If you're willing to live way out in east Queens or Brooklyn or northern Bronx maybe you could handle it. Another option is to get a roommate. Otherwise stay where you are.

You will not be able to live in the center of the city, but you should be able to find something nice and affordable in Brooklyn or nearby. NYC has a very good subway system so you will be able to get around easily. Most New Yorkers do not own cars.

Hello...everyone shut up now. I am from there. Believe me when I tell you you WILL starve to DEATH on 30 grand a year in NYC. Garbage men in NYC make 60 grand a year, and they are union. Move to Arkansas, you may only have to draw food stamps making 30 grand a year.

Definatly not in manhattan..probably not even in brooklyn. Are you sure thats a good estimate? maybe check salary.com or something because that is extremely low for somebody who has a degree in new york. but I think your best bet would be in new jersey.

LOL.......are you serious man? NYC.

You might have problems living in NY making 5 times that.

Try Brooklyn or some other borough.

It depends where in NYC. You would be hard pressed to find an affordable apt in Manhattan. You would have to live in the outer boroughs or NJ (Southern NJ) or Newark.

Try craigslist.

Well, at first you said "survive," and I would say yes. But then you said live comfortably, and that's going to be a stretch.
But ... I'm sure lots of people do it. It just depends on what you call comfortable.
