I am thinking of taking a holiday in Ecudor next year. I understand that they use US Dollars as currency, but would like to know if this is still a cheap country to visit in comparrison to other south american countries?

It's a relatively inexpensive country. You will find a complete meal for $1 at some places, but if you want to eat at the Hilton then expect to pay $20 more. Nevertheless, you will find that you can go from the beach to the mountains for approximately $100 (if you go by plane) and you will find tons of nice places to visit for way less than that. A taxi cab ride costs approximately $3 for a 30 minute ride. Just be aware that - as in most countries - if you look and sound like a foreigner they might increase their prices.

Hi there, I'm Ecuadorian!! A couple of Greek friends living in Nebraska visited me last year and let me tell you, they were very amazed with the prices here! They even took a picture of a sign in a small restaurant in Quito saying: Hamburger or Hot Dog, french fries and soda for only $1,00. They had so much fun eating the hamburgers!! and they took the picture because they said their friends in Omaha could never believe them the prices of food in here! This is a cheap country and the food is very tasty, although I would be careful and take the common precautions when visiting other countries and eating in decent places.

Of course, organization and schedules are not our strengths, but that's part of our "charm" ;-) I can only tell you that all my foreigner friends have had a great time when they've come here! But if you need some other info, email me to: smoreno1_2000@yahoo.com I live in Guayaquil (coastal area) and I may be of help.

Local produce is very cheap and so is the cost of living. Their are cheaper countries but Ecuador offers more variety, in culture and geography. Its a beautiful country. Your going to have a great time.
