They are usually expelled during birth. Depending on how developed they were and how long they have been dead, they may come out stillborn and underdeveloped. In the worst cases, the dead fetuses can come out as foul-smelling blackish-green slime. When this occurs, the mother cat usually has to be taken immediately to the vet, because her whole uterus (and eventually her entire body) can be "poisoned" by the spillage.

my mothers a veterinarian and i asked her this
she said that if no one knows about the kitten that has died , it will poison the mother cats blood stream and eventually kill her . but if you do know about it or see signs of:
bleeding
biting
slowness
or unusual behavior
you must got to the vet and have it taken out !

u mean the uterus? the same thing that happens so humans, either a still born (being born dead) or if the pregnancy is not that far along, nothing, they are not born
