My mom always had a "shoe box" or "shoe shelf" by the front door (or garage door - whatever door you come in most) and as soon as I came in the door with my friends - she would yell from the kitchen "Remember, shoes off by the door kids". The shoe shelf is also a good reminder and doesn't make it look like you are singling out the friends.

Most kids will automatically take off their shoes when they walk in anyway. When my kids invite friends over for the first time we try to be outside and doing something when they arrive. Then I will invite them inside but stop to take off my shoes. Nine times out of ten they will see this and take theirs off as well. If not I just say "oh, by the way we don't wear shoes in the house so whenever you come over just kick them off here." No one has ever entered my home wearing shoes. Usually just a pile of shoes will cue kids that hey no shoes inside.

Just lastnight my oldest daughter had 12 friends over for an all night horror movie night (They ended up with the lights on all in a clump by 3 this morning they had spooked themselves so badly.... The best is when one of the cats knocked over a tall stack of movies during the barn exorcism in "The Exocism of Emily Rose" nothing like 12 teenagers screaming and holding eachother in fear because of gravity and a cat LOL) ... When I met each of the kids at the door I asked them to please take thier shoes off I had foot powder and stray available at the door along with a bunch of new slipper socks...
None of the kids had a problem taking off thier shoes spraying a bit of odor eaters spray inside (wow some of the guys had smelly feet) a bit of spray or powder on the feet and a pair of nice cozy slipper socks... I keep 25 or so pair of slipper socks in a giant basket near the door with the foot powder and spray all the time... When the kids were ready to leave this morning they all got back into thier shoes and socks... I put all the slipper socks in the washer this morning with fungus and germ killer and will let them soak over night ... Tomorrow I will wash them with detergent, bleach, and oxyclean then they will be ready to go back in the sock basket for later use..
As long as you have something they can use to illiminate/mask odor... and extra socks if thiers are smelly they don't have a problem...
The kids lastnight were especially happy because I let them all wear my glow in the dark Halloween slipper socks at one point the turned off all the kights and were dancing in the dark looking at all the ghosts, bats, and witches on thier socks...

Generally, just be very direct and ask them. If your child is going to "die" is you approach thier friends, remind them that they must be responsible and point out the house rules to their guests. However, in my experience, all of my daughters' friends have been more than willing to follow the "no shoe" rule. The ones that are over a lot even have their own slippers to wear if they prefer that to bare socks or bare feet!

Just come right and tell them.
Sorry guys, no shoes in the house..they must be taken off at the door.
I don't think it matters what age the kids are, kids are usually very respectful in other people's homes.

Just tell them to take their shoes off. You child should also tell them to take their shoes of at the door as he probably does as he's walking in with them. Or you can put a sgn on your door NO SHOES. Kids will respect your principles if they know what they are.

Its not your decision to make. Tell your son that what the boys mother says, goes and its not your place to change her mind. Maybe if you dont want them split up, you should put your kid in the other high school
