No Dog, Male Or Female, Should Be Bred Before They Are Two Years Old.

why? because 85% of heritable defects or diseases will show up by the 2nd B-day.

AND... do not forget that both M and F dogs need specific genetic testing to screeen for heritable and infectious disease =before= they are bred.

these include, AT MINIMUM:
* OFA or PennHIP radiographs of joints, including hips and knees in Poodles (hip dysplasia and patellar luxation are pretty common)

* CERF certificates: these are exams of the eye, performed by a board-certified specialist, NOT a regular vet; they are only good for 12 mos, so they need to be renewed every yr. Any breeding dog, M or F, should have a current CERF-certificate.

those are in all breeds; in addition, if the dog has never been shown and has no Championship, a breeder or judge or handler who is an expert in the breed should examine the dog and make sure that they meet the breed standard.

Ur own vet should do a thorough exam for any anomalies, like a heart-murmur, elbow fragment, or other physical problem that is heritable (any breed).

in POODLES:
Sebaceous Adenitis is a skin-disease that is heritable, ugly and painful; it can be fatal, or chronic and severe. the dogs have a very poor quality of life.

EYE problems: cataracts, PRA and several other diseases, as well as entropion and ectropion, occur in Poodles (all sizes).

INFECTIOUS diseases:
Bang's disease or Brucellosis is an STD that is found in dogs and also cattle and other ruminants; it's contagious, and people can get it. it causes sterility, miscarriage, stillbirths, abortion, and can be a chronic come-and-go feverish illness, causing all kinds of serious side-effects. it requires a blood test of BOTh sire and dam, before they are bred.

that's just for starters.

also: U should have buyers lined up for the pups =Before= the breeding.

and have U thought abt an emergency C-section? even in a mini, that's a cool grand, if she's in trouble and U don't act, U will lose dam and litter together.

have U ever delivered a baby? cleaned up afterbirth? do U know that someone has to BE THERE thruout, to count each afterbirth, be sure that every pup is breathing, make sure the cords are disinfected, etc etc?

then U have TWO MONTHS of puppy-care, and at least THREE WEEKS of puppy-poop after mom stops eating the babies' stools... U still want to do this?!

BE VERY SURE - and have the bucks to do it right: right by the pups, right by Ur F dog, right by the breed. otherwise, save Urself and Ur dog a lot of trouble, and the pups a lot of grief: desex Ur girl!!
=before= that next heat - U've already doubled her chances of mammary cancer, just with this one estrus.

first of all, before getting a pet, do your homework. bitches get in heat every 6 months. dont be an idiot and breed her. if you dont even know the simple "how many times does my dog have her heat cycle"? how the hell do you expect to breed? are you really this stupid or are you playing? a female should not be breed until they are at least 2 years old!!! this is when they fully mature inside and out. they usally stop growing at 1 year. ignorent people like you should not be allowed pets. do some research before you buy animals.

She should come back in 'heat' in about 6 months, however, barely a year, is still too young to breed. She needs to wait at least until the third season, as she began a little young..she needs to mature mentally and physically, be assure a healthier old age, and that she is old enough too be a responsible mom, and care well for her puppies..
she will be full grown by 12 months, but not fully developed until 18 months..

She will be in heat again in 6months......but a vet will recommend that you not breed her until she is at least 2yrs old.....Do for health reasons. She should stop growning around the age of 1.5 yrs old. If I were you I would ask your vet about when the best time to breed her would be. Because of her small breed it will be best to wait until she is 2yrs old. In the long run it would be a bad idea to breed her at the age of 1. Health problems will occur later in her life if she is bred to early. Just check with your vet, or go online and search for your question, just type your question in and press search and you should come up with some information. So good luck.

Most heats come every six months, but some dogs can have "split seasons" and come into heat every three months.

At 6-1/2 mnths, your dog should be about as big as she's going to be if she's truly a "miniature" dog. She may start filling out and packing on muscle and weight now, but she's most likely as "grown" as she's going to be.

Yes he is obviously sexually mature. You need to get your female to the vet as she is far too young to bear a litter of pups. Either get the pregnancy terminated (morning after pill) or get an emergency spay. If you are not intending to show or breed then get your male neutered. He should have been done before 4 months.

She will not be ready to breed for her next heat, or the next one or the next one.

But obviously you would already know that if you weren't only looking to make a quick buck.

Do her(and all other abandoned animals) a favor and have her spayed.
