If you are using an electric coffee pot like a Mr Coffee or Bunn use water right out of the cold water faucet. It doesn't have to cold but just out of cold water faucet. The coffee maker works better if it's not hot water. Plus it saves energy by not taking hot water out of the water heater in your home. The coffee pot will heat the water to the right temperature for the coffee to turn out right.

It is better to use cold water if you are using bottled water. If you are using tap water it is better to use water out of the hot water side if you don't have a water softener because of the lime content of tap water. Lime is in all water and it will stick in the water heater to the heating element for the most part, so most of the lime is left behind unless your using a gas water heater. Have you ever noticed that your coffee maker dosent work well after a while? That's because lime has clogged your coffee maker because lime will stick to a very hot spot. To clean out your coffee pot just put in some vinegar and turn it on until it just starts to spit out vinegar and then shut it off for about an hour, then run the vinegar out of your coffee maker and run a full run of water through it and the yuckie stuff that comes out is the lime buildup. There is also rust and sulfur in some water so all of this will hamper the taste of your coffee. I hope this will help with your decision! Also If your car is in need of water in its radiator it is better to use distilled water that you can get at the store because of the same reason, the lime has stuck to the thermostat in you car and it makes it stick at the first sign of cold weather. Have you ever noticed people with their hoods up and steam coming out? That's the reason!

1/4 cold, 3/4 hot. Try it yourself!
Water temperature is crucial to the proper extraction of flavor from the ground coffee. The recommended brewing temperature of coffee is 93 °C (199.4 °F). Any cooler and some of the solubles that make up the flavor will not be extracted. If the water is too hot, some undesirable elements will be extracted, adversely affecting the taste, especially in bitterness.

Cold. I can't remember where I heard this, but supposedly, the coffee is apt to turn out less bitter if you use cold water.
