SLR means "single lens reflex." An SLR camera doesn't have a viewfinder lens above the real lens, rather it uses a mirror or a digital image to viewfind through the real lens allowing the photographer better ability to compose photographs while shooting them. Professionals use SLR cameras.

People have already answered this question for you. The only thing I want to add is that an SLR is far superior to a standard digital if you are shooting professionally. However, the feature is only useful if you actually look through the viewfinder. If you simply stare at the screen, then it won't make much of a difference to you. I have two digital cameras, one is an SLR. Granted it was far more expensive and larger because it is an SLR, but I use it when I want high quality.

SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. In this sort of camera one lens is used for both focusing and taking this picture. In most SLRs light is directed between the 2 functions by means of a 45 degree mirror which swings up as the shutter is activated but before it actually opens. The big advantage of an SLR over other camera types is that the image in the viewfinder is the same as that in actually captured on the film.

But the major diffrence is Price

A single lens reflex camera has a mirror that puts the image (as seen through the camera lens) onto the viewfinder, so you can see exactly what the picture will encompass. The mirror is flipped up out of the way when the exposure is actually taken, whether on film or on an electronic sensor.

In a SLR (Single Lens Reflex) you are viewing through the same lens you shoot through. If your camera is not an SLR, you are viewing through a viewfinder, not the actual photographing lens.

seem on the Olympus E500 2 lens kit, evaluate the positive homes of the E500 to the Canon, the Pentax or the Nikon 'lower priced' DSLRs. obviously the suitable fee for the money. Oly kit lenses are a lot more effective perfect than the different digicam kit lenses.
