Hi Nicky...most over the counter products tend to be ineffective on flea infestation, however quite harmful to us and our pets. Sergeant's included.
Here's an excerpt on all over the counter flea products:
http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/
The Poison Necklace: A Pesticide collar is nothing but a poison necklace around your pet’s head. It emits a constant toxic cloud that your pet inhales, and so do you, every time you hug your pet. What about those insecticidal flea and tick shampoos and powders, sprays and dips? Labels warn you not to get any on your skin, use rubber gloves and wash your hands! Yet, they are rubbed into your pet’s skin and then are licked by your pet! Signs of pesticide overdose in your pet can include vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, seizures and respiratory problems. Flea Collars: The Cancer Prevention Coalition (CPC), which informs the public about preventable exposures to carcinogens, list many brand-name products as containing either carcinogens or neurotoxins, or both. Avoid flea products by Longlife, Hartz, Pet Agree, Sergeant’s and Zodiac. Flea and tick dips, sprays, powders, foggers and bombs

Consider safer and effective products such as Frontline, Revolution or Advantage which can be purchased either at Petco or online with 800-Pet Meds http://www.1800petmeds.com/cat.asp?LV=10

RE:
Is sergeants flea and tick spray safe?
I have 4 cats and they all have fleas. I was told that I should never use any flea stuff from sergeants, because it could harm or even kill your pet. I want to know if anyone else has heard this. I bought the spray but I'm scared to put it on them. Please help

It may be safe to use, but it doesn't work. It will only kill the fleas it comes into contact with, does not kill flea eggs or provide any preventative for your cats. Spend the money, get Frontline Plus or somethin similiar and get rid of the fleas for good. If you had a bad head cold and your mom gave you a cough drop instead of a product that would eliminate your symptons, wouldn't you feel cheated? Same with your cats! You can order Frontline on the web at a reasonable cost.

Most cats can and do have serious reactions to any over the counter flea products. There are many good quality flea products available, Frontline, Advantage, Bio-Spot etc. You would be better off with one of these products. Better to be safe than sorry. Regards KG

I would NEVER spray anything on a cat. I only use ant spray occasionally outside when the cats aren't around.
Breath is life - any poison you spray around yourself and your cats will end up in their lungs and can cause serious harm.
Advantage and Frontline have been used for ten years now and are considered safe for cats and YOU and your family.
Take the spray back and get the proper medication from your vet or over the internet. Be sure you get cat treatment and use the proper dosage which is figured by the cat's weight.

Well, I used Sargeant's flea spray (the kind you spray on carpet and furniture only - not on the cat) to treat my home for fleas. I did room by room and made sure that the cats did not enter a room I just sprayed for at least 2 hours. They were fine and the flea problem came under control. To treat the cats themselves, I used Advantage. After that, the cats had no fleas.

I wouldn't use it if I were you. I would recommend however, going to the vets and picking up some Frontline Plus for your kitties. You don't have to have an appt with the vet and you can get this otc. It is VERY effective. While you're there, ask them what you can get to get rid of the fleas that are in your house, in furniture, etc.

None of the OTC flea products is safe for use on your cats. It can cause neurological issues, seizures and death. Use only flea products from your vet.
