I've been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, clinical depression, and anxiety. I'm functional in the sense that I pay my bills on time, have a Master's degree, am in a relationship, and have a career. However, my moods are erratic, I'm often depressed, and procrastination has ruined aspects of my life. I've been to three different types of therapists in the past 12 years for different lenths of time... and I have been medicated with prozac, lexapro, xanax, buspar, wellbutrin, and currently, effexor. Low and high doses have been administered, but I continue to be depressed and very moody. I've also taken St.Johns Wort for a few months, but that didn't work either. I continue to lay in bed for hours after work, or overeat (constantly gaining and losing the same 50 pounds). These are just a couple of ways my depression shows itself. I've been on numerous web sites about different psychological disorders, and read my share of self help books. Don't know what to do.

Okay, well, depending upon how open minded you are, you may or may not find the following information helpful. However, havingf faced similar patterns in my own life (though perhaps not as extreme in some ways as what you have described) I know first hand that addressing any type of psychological disorder must be done at the cause, rather than trying to manipulate the effects (depressing, anxiety, eating disorder, etc.). Basically, what it comes down to is that they all have the same root cause, they just get played out different ways depending upon your "karmic makeup" (and I use that term loosely). My first piece of advise is, forget studying the disorders and forget psychology (it's only a theory), psychology only goes part way which is why it usually treats symptoms and not the cause. (And I was a psych major in college) Anyway, a rather introductory look at this... though you said you read a lot of self help books... would be to read a book called "The Power of Now" by author and spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle. He has a really nice section on something that he calls "pain body" which you can probably relate to. If you live in a big city, you can probably get the book from the library, if it isn't checked out. Understanding this aspect of myself has been immensely helpful because it has helped me to address some of the issues like procrastination, moodiness, depression and all the rest of it. If you are really wanting to understand this and you are to the point where you are wondering what it's all about, then read it. If you aren't ready for it, you will know in about 5 pages or less. It isn't the answer to your problems, but it can really get you on the right track. Good luck.

I have somewhat good news for you. All that you have tried will never work and no one important ever said they would work. Start with the known and start small. There is no friend there for you and you are the loneliest person in the world. Now begin to unravel your beliefs. You have to accept that you are an outcast Give up all medication and doctors where possible and learn how depression is made in your brain. False expectations have been drilled into you because you didn't fit the social group. When life showed you reality your brain began to hurt you back for learning errors. Make the changes slowly. Find one new friend who too is an outcast. Start to see better. And good luck for now.

I can relate as I have many of the same symptoms. Therapy helps, but I find even sticking to the excercises difficult because of the depression / procrastination.
If you are truly borderline then you likely need to get into therapy with a therapist who deals in dialectical behavioural therapy. I've done a lot of reading and this seems to be the best therapy for re-organizing the way borderlines think. Really, your ego states are dissociated so your superego and id are arguing non-stop and it can be difficult to think. Usually borderlines were subject to some kind of severe trauma in early childhood. It might help to get to the root of this. It can be painful to try to understand your early years, but understanding can be crucial. Anything I read about borderline recovery says that it is a lifelong process and very, very painful. But if you're borderline you already know what pain is and likely want to make changes.
One thing I've found helpful of late is trying to get connected more solidly to my body. I have generally ignored what it tells me for years, but its responses are perhaps as important as what you think.
Exercise is also important as well as connecting with nature. For some reason borderlines seem very attuned to nature and it can be very calming to spend some time walking in nature.

EDUCATE YOURSELF.
I'm bipolar, with several other lower key mental problems. I know it's not easy, God knows I have come close to throwing in the towel over and over. My meds change over and over, it's frustrating. I help in the mental health community, to try to understand more. Look into classes that are aimed at helping people just like you.
There is a wellness and recovery class called W.R.A.P. There is individual counseling, group.
The point is Your Not Alone. Mental illness is a deep pool that noone knows the depth of except people who have it too.
Take it easy on yourself, keep trying to do your best and look for things you know will help you go up if you are down.
It isn't easy but it's worth it. Life is worth living even if it's not the way we wish it would be.

Cymbalta and Zyprexa meds have worked for my depression. Also you should analyse if the therapy your receiving works, if not evaluate if you want to change shrink. I also lay in bed for hours after work and I am sure is because you are exhausted and stressed. Try to do other activities: acupuncture and yoga are excellent for depression. You don't mention any exercise as part of your treatment. Exercise is a great way to reduce the effects of depression.
I'm wondering if there is a massive emotional trauma in your past, that will have to be resolved before you get better.
