if you have it outside of the car take it to the battery and turn key on then hold the posive to the battery and the ground to the negative

you need a way to connect it to a Direct Current source (like a battery, mentioned before). I probably wouldn't recommend holding the wires to a live battery though. Probably not the smartest idea.
