If he's eating significantly more than before he could have a tape worm or other internal parasite that making it hard for him to get nutrition from the food he eats (so he eats more to compensate for the loss). We suggest taking a stool sample to your vet to check for parasites.

If he's eating only moderately more than before, he could be packing on the fat for winter.

The best way to tell if your dog is eating "too much" is to check its rib cage. If you can FEEL but not see the ribs, the dog is eating the proper amount of food for its body size. But if you can't see or feel the ribs, the dog is too fat.

It is possible, that it may be because of the winter coming, but there are many other possibilities.

Have you recently changed foods? If you have he may be eating more because he's getting less nutrients from the new diet when compared to the old diet.
Is he more active than compared to normal? If so he needs to eat more since he needs the calories to compensate.
Has there been a change in the household? Humans will eat as a form of stress relief, and other mammals will too.

Regardless, watch his weight closely, if there's no change in it, then there is probably nothing to worry about. If he is gaining or loosing weight, go to your vet and talk to them.

My dogs all eat about 1/3 more as Winter approaches..If he isn't becoming obese, it is fine..If he is getting too fat, just see that he gets more exercise..

You are probably right. I would just watch him for any signs of obesity, or even worms. I'm sure everything is fine. He is just a hungry dog. It will pass
