There is no law stating the child has to carry either parents lastname... The child can have a completly different lastname than the parents...
Traditionally the child is given the lastname of the father whether born in or out of wedlock..
More recently parents have been choosing to hyphenate the childs lastname including both lastnames such as Smith-Jones... Just make sure when you look at the names you look at them as words as well as names because some combinations bring to mind interesting things...

Usually the child get the father's last name but if you can tell that the father is not into the relationship then the child could get your last name but even if the father doesn't stick arid it still is kinda common for the child to have the father's last name

It used to be normally for the Father's last name to be given to the child, but in today's society if it agreed upon, the Mom's name can be used...also hyphenated names are very popular...mom's and dad's together

Well, which of you is going to be carrying the baby for nine months, going through agony, and then getting up four times a night for the next year and a half? I would say whichever partner is going to be doing those duties deserves to give the baby their last name.
