To some Christians, if you are not "saved" you are not really a Christian. Asinine isn't it?

Let me start by saying that I grew up as a Lutheran, but now I am nondenominational. The problem that most non-Catholic Christians have with the Catholic Church is the fact that the Church seems to be more about power (almost political) than about the teachings of Christ. Here are some examples.

1. The Pope is said to be Jesus' representative here on earth. How can this be when Jesus clearly said that He would send the Helper (the Holy Spirit) as His representative.
2. Why must you confess your sins to priests. Priests are not our intercessors with God. Jesus Christ is our intercessor with God. We can take our own prayers to the Throne of God.
3. On November 30, 2005, Pope Benedict made his statement,"Whoever seeks peace and the good of the community with a pure conscience, and keeps alive the desire for the transcendent, will be saved even if he lacks biblical faith."
The Catholic Catechism states the following, ""Since Christ died for all, and since all men are in fact called to one and the same destiny, which is divine, we must hold that the Holy Spirit offers to all the possibility of being made partakers, in a way known to God, of the Paschal mystery." Every man who is ignorant of the Gospel of Christ and of his Church, but seeks the truth and does the will of God in accordance with his understanding of it, can be saved. It may be supposed that such persons would have desired Baptism explicitly if they had known its necessity."
The statements directly contradicts John 14:6, "Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. "

These are just some of the examples of why non-Catholics have a problem with the Catholic Church.

Catholics are Christians but not all christians are catholic. Catholicism is a branch of Christianity that differes from others by the way they celebrate their saints, venerate Mary, Confess to a preist, and listen to an infallible Pope. That is not to say that I think they are not a valid or important religion, however I do not follow their doctrine. To each his own. Have an angel touched day!

Roman Catholics are Christians, but like many Protestants, they have their own errors and mis-understandings of doctrine.
For instance, Roman Catholics will say that sins must be confessed to a priest to be forgiven. Protestants, for the most part, believe in the preisthood of every believer. That means that each believer in Jesus confesses directly to God because Jesus IS the High Priest.
I feel the answer is somewhere in the middle. Is it sometimes necessary to confess to another believer? Absolutely. Especially if the other believer is the one wronged by one's actions or words.
If the sin is against God however, it is between the believer and God how and when to confess.
Mostly though, I believe that it grieves God for us to get caught up in categorizing humanity. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We all need to ask God to guide us into HIS truth and forget about the approval/dis-approval of others.

I do not like to use the word "religion." For that is mans attempt in their best efforts to get right with God. Many different demoninations, or practices, that people follow that makes them feel like they can get in "good standing" with our creator. Thats why there are so many conflicts between these "religions" and people are fighting over it. Thats the result of tainting God's plan. We forget the reason Jesus came and died for us! He came so that we would have the true way back to the Father, and that He would establish the TRUE way of living. Thus, Christianity, which means Christ-like or little-Christ, is NOT a religion but merely the lifestyle of Christ that we are to replicate. Not by our own efforts, but made possible by the Holy Spirit in a relationship with Jesus Christ. Accept His Gift of salvation and experience the life of abundance. May the Lord Bless You Abundantly!!!

Not only are Catholics Christians, they are the first Christians. From Catholics, come the other Christian faiths.

The top 10 most common misconceptions of the Catholic Church are:

1. Catholics worship Mary. No, we pray to Mary for her intercession, just as you would ask a friend or family member to pray for you. The traditional “Hail Mary” prayer recited by Catholics is a mirror of the words spoken by the Angel Gabriel in the first chapter of Luke.

2. Catholics think works get them to heaven. No, we believe, as it says in the Book of James, that faith without works is empty. We further believe that we are saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus and that He paid the debt for our sins. Our good works show that our faith has merit.

3. Catholics worship the Pope. No, we believe that the Pope is a human being, capable of sin, just like all the rest of us. We do believe that he is the successor of St Peter on earth as it says in the Gospel of Matthew and that when he speaks from the Chair of Peter, on a matter of faith or morals, he speaks without error. As a matter of point, Pope Benedict has never done this.

4. Catholics pay to get their loved ones out of purgatory. No, we ask that masses be said for our dead loved ones just as St Paul reminds us to pray for the living and the dead. A small donation ($5) might be made to pay for the card that we then send to the family to let them know that a mass was said in honor of the deceased.

5. Catholics do not read the Bible. Yes, we do. John Paul II declared the year 2000, the Year of the Bible, and Catholics around the world read the entire Bible during that year. Virtually all Catholic Church’s have a bible study program. At every Sunday Mass, there are three readings from the Bible. Catholics are required to attend Sunday and thereby hear the Word of the God.

6. Catholics think the Sacraments get them to heaven. No, we believe that only the death and resurrection of Jesus get us to heaven. We believe the Sacraments, such as the Eucharist Jesus instituted at the Last Supper, give us grace to help us follow God's will for us.

7. Catholics belong to a cult. No, our church has been around for 2000 years, much longer than any other Christian church. At more than one billion members, the Catholic Church is the single largest Christian denomination. Many people join and some (sadly) leave the Catholic Church every day of their own free will.

8. Catholics don't baptize. Yes, we do and our Church started baptism. Whether a person is immersed or sprinkled is a man-made technicality. It cannot be believed that Jesus would condemn someone to hell for all eternity because of the rite of Baptism they received. There are countless historical Christian texts, of reliable authorship, that speak of sprinkling in the very early Christian Church.

9. Catholics are not Christians. Yes, we are and we profess with our lips and believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord, the Messiah, the Son of God come down from heaven to save men from their sins. We pray the Apostles Creed and the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus name is mentioned in some form more than 50 times at every Sunday mass. We strive to follow the two great commandments of Jesus to love God with our whole heart and our neighbor as ourselves.

10. Catholics have a different Bible. No, we have the Bible approved by the Universal Christian Church since the year 380. During the Protestant reformation several books were taken out of the Bible in the late 1400s. Martin Luther even took the Book of James and Revelation out of the Bible as well, before they were restored. The Catholic Bible has been the most consistent of all translations for more than 1600 years.

The "Catholic Church" has for many many years held itself up as the only true Christian church.

Protestants believe that the Catholic Church has erred on various issues of doctrine (hence the splits).

Some Protestants carry this to an extreme.

That's disappointing if it isn't. That's the easiest way to heaven. Man! As a Catholic, I can kill someone and all I have to do is confess it to a priest, say a couple "Hail Mary's", feel on some rosary beeds, and blow out a few candles and I'm all clean. I can go back out and kill somebody else and repeat. I'm still Heaven bound.

It's the idol thing. I'm not trying to diss catholics, just explaining. The bible tells us not to bow down to idols, i.e. graven images, and catholics bow down to and pray to statues of Mary and various saints, not to mention putting the figure of Christ on the cross. Jesus told us to pray to "God, the Father", not Jesus, not Mary, not any catholic appointed saint. Sure, many of the saints I'm sure really are saints, but saints are appointed saints by God, not the catholic church. So that's why a lot of other christian denominations don't see catholics as real christians, the idol worship and praying to their own self-appointed saints instead of directly to God. God said He's a jealous God, so I'm guessing that might tick Him off a little.

Catholics are considered Christians because they do teach about hte birth and death of Jesus and most of their practices are seemingly connected with Biblical things and ideas.
I do not consider them Christians as by definition, Christians are Christ followers. Most of the traditions and practices of Catholicism is pagan in origin, very little of it is Biblically based, and truthfully most of their teachings are completely contrary to what the Bible teaches. Most Catholics do not accept this though, they believe that God gave them the authority to disregard His teachings and establish their own ways. This is not biblical and is actually warned against in the Bible. Catholicism is nothing more than pagan idolotry with a thin veil of Christianity (in name only, not deed)
