They are all soldiers with one big distinction: Marines are an extension of the Deparment of the Navy. They come from the Sea, they are stationed on amphibious assault ships in a MEU, or Marine Expeditionary Unit. They are not all on ships at any one time, but they rotate in deployments aboard ship. They do this as a first response measure if anything happens where it would take too long to get the army there. Marines are from the sea, hence their names. Army grunts are strictly land based, and very rarely, if ever, since WW II spend any time on troop ships. Hope this helps a little bit.

Most military members are quite happy when the media gets it right.

Soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard (some times called Coasties, some times lumped in with Navy sailors).

Soldiers are ground forces, military members serving in the U.S. Army.

The U.S. Marine Corps is a department of the Navy. It says as much right on the Marine Corps seal. Marines are a ground force that is typically and traditionally delivered to the battle by ship. That is not always the case anymore.

Sailors are members of the U.S. Navy obviously. However, U.S. Navy Corpsmen (Navy medics) provide field and combat medical services to the Marine Corps. So, it is not uncommon to hear of X Marines and 1 Sailor getting injured or killed. The sailor is typically a Corpsman.

Airmen serve in the U.S. Air Force. When an airman is listed KIA that is usually a downed aircraft. However, it could also be one of the Air Force special forces members. The PJs are pretty busy people in the early part of most hostile action.

The U.S. Coast Guard is some times referred to as a sailors, coasties or Guard members. U.S. Coast Guard Damage Controlman Third Class Nathan B. Bruckenthal was the first Coast Guard combat death since Vietnam.

Most military members are proud of their service and appreciate being addressed correctly. Most Marines will correct anyone who calls them a soldier. The joke goes that soldiers consider it a compliment to be called a Marine. It's good for a chuckle but for the most part, soldiers are proud of who they are.

I think your right, they are all soldiers even the high ranking officers are soldiers. But when you are a marine you serve in a specific branche of the military and you want that to show. The army has allways been seen as the bulk of the military and all the other branches are mostly seen as "specialists" in some other field like sailing or flying. I.e Sailors, marines, airmen, etc.

I think the news should read: today four soldiers were killed three where marines,or something like that.

A Marine is a marine and they do not take kindly to being called a soldier. They are first in, and blaze the trail. A soldier comes in after the marines have been there and clean up the rest.

They are all soldiers, but Marines prefer and earn the right to be called a "Marine" rather than soldier.

Different branches of service have different names for their members. The Marine Corps' members are called Marines. The Army has soldiers, the Air Force has airmen, and the Navy has sailors.

A Soldier is in the Army.
