My dachshund crossbreed is 8 months old, and is generally terrified of nail clippers. We tried trimming her nails before a couple of times, but now that she's older, we have great difficulty getting her to stay still. We also tried filing, but it's not as effective as clipping. We're also thinking of just taking her to the vet and have her claws trimmed there. Any other suggestions?

Give her Chamomile tea, to help her calm down.
Chamomile tea works very well, and is safe for her. Dump it out of the teabag, and use 1 teaspoon for small breed, up to 1 tablespoon for a large breed. Mix it in a little canned food, such as Mighty Dog, or Cesar's, and give about 30 minutes before she needs to relax. It will keep her happy, but reduce stress. It can be given as often as needed..Then, once you have her nails trimmed, then just file with the broad emory board that is made for acrylic nails (I get them 4 for $1) each week to stay on top of the chore..

I think it definately depends on the dog's personality. I've had dogs that are so scared of nail trimming and my dog now, just sits there and takes it.

When trimming my dog's nails, I do talk to him very softly while trimming his nails saying sweet things like, "good boy", "we're almost done" "you're going to be so handsome" and especially "gentle... gentle.." and while I'm talking to him, I also talk about getting a cookie so he knows what he'll get when he's done. I also pat him around the face and give him kisses too while I'm cutting the nails.

And when we're done, he gets a treat ! Good luck !

now that she's older the only thing i can think of is play with her paws all the time, while your watching tv, on the phone. touching her paws more and more shows her that it doesn't have to be scary when you go for them. In the end you may want to go to the vet anyways but the touching of the paws would help the vet to complete the nail clipping.

nail trimming is the most difficult thing i have to do. it is very nerve-wracking to me. usually i can trim 6 dog's nails, but one has to go to the vet. there is no way we can hold her still enough to trim nails and she's a chihuahua!

cost: $6

There are doggie calming products that might help calm her. Try Dr.'s Foster and Smith.com to find them, or ask your vet. I use the Vita Treat Pet Calm for car rides. Well, I don't use it, I give it to my Huskey who used to get sick on car rides. It kinda chills her out, like doggie Valium.
