I am a proud daddy of a beautiful 6 month old baby girl and my question is: If I were in a public place and my daughter was a bit older and she needed my help in the restroom, which restroom should I go to, Mens or Womens?

First thing, check for Family Restrooms. Not many malls have them but many of the large anchor stores do..especially places like Nordstrom, Macys, Ikea and the like. This is exactly what a Family Restroom is for and they are fabulous to have.

If however you find yourself in an either or situation, take your daughter into the men's room. If possible, use the handicapped stall as it is larger..more room for the both of you and the possible stroller. She may ask some questions about things she may see...just answer her very simply ("That is how Daddy's go potty at the mall"). There should be no issues doing that with her until she is closer to 6.

Take her into the men's room with you... It might be a good idea to give a shout "Girl coming in" as you enter so the guys have a few seconds to cover up should there be a need...

She will likely have questions as the plumbing in the mens room is different than the womens room just explain its a urinal and men use it to pee in... If you don't make a big deal about it neither will she...

Some places now have family restrooms where each toilet is in a little room off of one large room with baby changing stations and sinks.. If a family restroom is an option take.. If not follow instructions above...

They are starting to come out with more family restroom which are great. If you only have the choice of men's or women's I think that you would have to chose the men's room, or have your daughter go into the lady's room by herself. If you have your daughter use the lady's room by herself tell her just to use the restroom and then come right back out. In my opinion, I hope that they come out with more family restrooms. I have the oppisite problem with a six month old son and being a lady.

I am a firm believer in not sending a child into a public restroom alone. Up to a certain age (maybe 2 or 3), she should go with you if there are stalls. After that, she really doesn't need to be in the men's restroom. Maybe you could just carry a portable little potty in your car, and she could go there. I think that's what I would do.

When she is older, first thing you do is have them go the bathroom at home before you leave. This is something I still have my children do.
If you have to take her to a public restroom you would have to take her to the men's room with you. Always look in first to make sure men are not standing at the urinal.
Also some malls have Family restrooms where you can take her.
Good luck

This happens all the time, actually.

I suggest when she needs your help, you open the door slightly and ask "Is anyone in here as I am a male needing to help my daughter?"

If no one is in there, I would enter and politely let females know as they enter you are assisting your daughter and sorry for the inconvenience.

You might get those parents who are like "take her to the mens room" but ummm, she is a female and there is a separation of bathrooms for a few reasons obviously.

If some one is in the bathroom, you say "Ok, let me know when everyone is done so I can assist my daughter" Then assure your daughter it will be shortly.

Which by then, I don't see any particular reason a child would need you to be there. You can undue her pants or belt etc with out stepping in the bathroom.

Not the womens & the mens is tricky because of urinals (but if she has to go , go in the mens) But my husband is so happy to see that many new malls have family restrooms, they are basically like a handicap rest room the doors are off the hallway & there is no uncomforite when my hubby takes my daughter potty.

When ever I go into Walmart there will be boys up to the age of aprox. 9 yrs old in the womens bathroom. And I hate! I want some privacy without some little boy trying to peer into my stall and giggling about it. Most places have a family restroom now days. And I usually just go in there bc I have my daughter with me and I don't want to deal with peeping toms.

I would poke my head into the mens and if no one is in there, go there(or walk past all the men and bee-line for an empty stall). That is what my husband did with our now 3 year old...until she became miss independant! now he stands outside the door of the womens restroom while she does her thing and then she feels like a "big girl". it's sad when they get that growm-up...enjoy her being a baby!

For your child's safety in these days, never let her go alone into any bathroom until she is 10 or older. I am a recently retired elem teacher. I've seen a lot. There are options, plan ahead. Make sure you are where there is a female with you whom you can trust, try to avoid going when out if possible. Stop at a restaurant or small location where you can stand right outside a one room bathroom. etc. I took my son into the women's until I felt he was old enough to be safe. Take her into a man's stall. Much better than an unsafe bathroom.
