Babies are just beginning to develop when they are born, and they have much to learn. Also, consider the vast number of languages in existance. If a baby was to be born with the ability to speak, what would determine the language in which they would speak?

It is a matter of development. The infant must learn how to speak just as much as they should learn to crawl or walk. It is imperative that they learn this because it is like an exercise, helping them to become stronger and smarter. Because they're learning also from their parents also helps them learn about their parents. I mean if the baby was born already knowing how to speak and she only knew Swahili, you'd be in a pretty big mess.

Babies vocal chords are fully developed at birth, they have all the capacity of talking, however not having any teeth and not being taught words at birth makes it really hard for them to talk. However not a lot of people know that babies are capable of talking at the age of 6 months, it just takes time and commitment and now a days parents don't really take the time to teach their children.

I have heard many opinions on this subject from babys are straight from heaven and if they knew how to speak they could give away the secrets of heaven.. to babys are unable to speak because language is a learned response...

I think it's due to several factors, language is learned and babys lack the fine motor skill and coordination involved in speech... Babys understand language before they are able to speak it leading me to believe language is indeed learned from those speaking around you and fine motor skill is required to reproduce speech..

Actually, they are born with an amazing ability to distinguish between all the languages of the world- all the phonemes and sounds of each language. What an amazing ability! Sure, they can't articulate their knowledge yet, but look out!

They know how to talk, we just don't understand the language they are speaking.

Watch friggin' "Rugrats".

Why aren't babies born being able to use the toilet? Or at least a litterbox? If cats can do it how lame does that make babies?
