Community Service can take many forms, some of which may actually be fun.

Become a Volunteer Docent for your local Museum, Zoo or Aquarium.
As a Volunteer Docent, you can conduct vistors on tours, and explain to them something about what they're seeing.
(I know for a fact that Volunteer Docents are needed by local museums, as I was a Docent for many years at our State Historical Society Museum.)

It's actually a chance for you to become a "local expert" on something in your own community, (and have FUN at the same time, especially if its on a subject you like!)
And you won't be expected to have ALL the answers--no Docent ever does--just do a bit of research and provide the answers at another time! You can also make new friends as a Docent, and this work will count as valid work experience in the future.

Hi Alicia, Try your local community homeless shelter. You would be surprised at how it will affect you, and make you appreciate what you have. Not everyone in a homeless shelter is there because they are lazy and don't want to work. Circumstances that come into our lives can change everything so quickly. When my son was in college, one year he helped at a homeless shelter serving a holiday meal. He called me and said...Mom, there are people there just like us! There are families that have lost everything because the parents lost their jobs...I never realized Mom. It changed his outlook. I have always enjoyed helping the shelter in someway. One thing I do is every Christmas the gift my Mother in law would give me, I always remind her to take that money and give it to the homeless shelter. It isn't much, but they can get milk for the kids that live there. Sorry, didn't mean to go on so...it's just something I believe in very much. Good luck to you in whatever you choose to do.

Try calling your local historical society and ask if they accept community service volunteers. Another idea, which is a fun experience, is to locate a nonprofit thrift shop in your area - and work there. Look for one that is small, like one that supports individuals with developmental disabilities. You could work a full Saturday for two weeks in a row, and be finished with your requirement.

Volunteer your time at a Senior Citizens retirement home. It's an excellent way to learn about the needs of the elderly and also a way to gain some valuable life experience from some of the residents there.

I work in a senior hi rise and was surprised to find some of the folks - especially those with failing eyesight - love to have me read to them! I put chairs in a circle and read a book - a chapter a week (about an hour per chapter). I've read THE HIDING PLACE, LEFT TO TELL, and others. Max Lucado is great to read aloud because he writes in a way that flows so well. Good luck and God bless you. ~Nise~

Volunteer at your local fire/ambulance company.

They of course respond to emergency calls. Maybe you could attend and watch some training sessions.

Ben Franklin started the first organized volunteer firefighters.

They need all the help they can get, and who knows maybe you'll want to join and help out your community.

I'm a volunteer firefighter and I love it!!
Good Luck!!

will they accept an oral history project that you do at a local VA or nursing home?

Try to find some older female veterans and get their stories of what it was like to be in the military back during WWII and Korea.
