Hello,
My little girl Holly (23lbs) need hip surgery. she had a knee replacement 2 years ago and her knee is super strong, but now her femur joints are slipping and both need to be replace. My question is my vet wants to operated on both at the same time. He has assured me thats procedure is done when both femur joints are slipping. She is in pain and is on rinadyl 25mg she gets half a pill every 12 hours. My question is my vet correct with performing the operation on both at the same time? Or is there anything else I can do to help her instead of the operation
Thanks
Sue

I wouldn't doubt the vet. He has his degree, so I think he knows what he's doing.

Another option which would be a whole lot easier on the dog is Gold Bead Implants. This is a permanent form of acupuncture. I had a dog done a few years ago. She had been on Deramaxx for pain. After the implants, she no longer needed the pain meds. There is a lot on the net about this procedure so please, go do some research! My girl was done by Dr. Durkes of Marion, Ind. He invented the procedure. There are others around the country who are now doing the implants. I chose to drive from Tennessee to Indiana.
Not that this part matters, but the implants are a lot less expensive. What matters, is that it worked.

Oh man! You sound like you have quite the dilemma on your hands. I would definitely borrow the x-rays from your vet (they are property of the clinic so you cannot keep them) and get your records and find a second opinion. Anytime you have doubts it will give you a better idea of what you want to do if you have more information supporting it. Don't worry about offending your primary veterinarian. They should be understanding about you wanting all the answers. If they don't, well maybe it's best to find another vet. Also why is she on such a low dose of Rimadyl?

If you are unsure about the vet's opinion, you can always get a second opinion. I have a little mix breed dog and both his back knees slip but our orthopedic vet surgeon only wanted to do one at a time and so far fixing one has solved the problem. But I think hips are different, it makes sense to fix them both at once so I'd heed his advice it will help your little girl feel so much better! Good luck to you and your sweet pug!

If you really love this pet a lot then you should listen to the vet. You should know that if your child is in danger of this you would get him/her in surgery no mater the cost right ? then i say get the dog in surgery. If he passes be happy that he didn't have to suffer to die.

I would go with the vets plan. Did you get your dog from a pet store? Just wondering
