They stay on the dealers lots until they are sold. Manufacturers offer significant discounts to sell the 2006 models - sometimes discounts to the dealers, and sometimes rebates or discounts to consumers. It is not uncommon to see 2006 models still on a dealers lots thru December and even into January or February 2007.

Buying a car in late December can be an excellent time, especially if there is a lot of inventory available. You can often buy the car below the dealer's cost.

Cars stay on lot until the dealer sells them, whether it's to another dealer or a customer. Mfg's do not take cars back.

While it's true that now through Jan. is a great time to get a good deal, remember, you are left with what nobody else wanted. Exactly what it's called "leftover".

If you are going to buy a new car, if you plan on keeping it forever, then buy a leftover. If you keep cars for 4-5 years, then get the new model. The depreciation on the leftover, will end up more than the discount.

By the way, i remember a brand new 2001 model being sold as new in 2003, it does happen.

I like to think of it as the desperation lot. This is where car dealers have great deals on new (last year model) cars. If you are looking at one...this is what you do. The car you are looking at...go to www.kelleybluebook.com. enter all the information but in the milage area..enter an arbitrary #....such as 1000 miles or 10000 miles. This will show the value of the car once it leaves the lot. And this is the offer I'd give the dealer. They can do it. you may pay a bit more...just so they can make a buck...or you may pay less..just so they can get rid of the car.

Good luck

Car dealers do not send them back to the manufacturer. They have to keep them until they are sold. The manufacturer will give an auto dealer what is called "final pay" which helps them reduce the price of the car for a quick sell.

There are no unsold cars. Any leftover 2006 models will usually be discounted to move them. But they'll all be sold!
