Don't you become a citizen (not automatically of course) after you marry a citizen?

To China Doll - Are you serious? That is the dumbest answer I have seen. NO YOU DO NOT BECOME A CITIZEN AUTOMATICALLY JUST BY MARRYING A CITIZEN.
Jesus - if you are an American your lack of education is proof that America is going down the toilet fast.
To the Original Poster - Since neither of you is a Canadian (one is illegal and the other is American) you will have to apply under the Skilled Worker category - which takes on average 2 years to be processed. If either of you has a criminal record, then that processing time can be delayed to over 5 years.

Some Americans can't even go to Canada...If you have any type of criminal record they may deny you entry into the country...something as simple as "disturbing the peace" can bar you from entering Canada.....

Canada is VERY serious about citizenship. I use to live in Mich (Detroit) and when we traveled across the border, we had to show birth certificates......They are not out to play with you.
Suggestion: don't try is....they are not as easy as America !
