Anyone can be a fanatic with or without religion.Some are fanatic for religion and some against all religion.

As a Muslim, I'll answer your question from the point of view of my religion:
Fanatics ARE regarded as non-religious by Islam. Islam says that Muslims must not be extremists, and those who are would be punished by God (unless they repent, fix any harm they did and do good from now on).
According to Islam, Muslims must be moderate people following this moderate religion, and should not be extremists in order not to suffer themselves or harm those around. Extremism is also forbidden because it gives a false and hateful image about Islam and distorts God's words and Prophet Mohammed's teachings.

i'm not sure but i think i've seen that same zelot look iin a religious fanatic's eyes, as i have a gambling addict's or an alcoholic's eyes.

Yes, definitely! It can be really incredible and even disgusting what they are doing in there private lives! They are using going to church, etc., as a cover, and they do not want any true believers to go getting in there way. And churches can be very gullible to all of this.
