Baking soda mixed with a little bit of salt. The salt was to give it a little extra cleaning / scrubbing power.

Baking soda. Baking powder is a combination product and does not provide sufficient abrasive content to do the job well. Tastes terrible either way. I use Crest whitener paste which contains baking soda and has a very pleasant taste. Eureka! It works and is very inexpensive compared to the other whiteners. I believe I pay around $3.50 + tax for this product.
