I think it's more about letting things get you down. Like dwelling on negative things.
Some people feel more attacked by negativity right when they are trying to go the right way. And that can feel like the devil is trying to pull them down right when they know they are trying to do their best.
It almost feels that you can personalize evil forces into a being called "the devil", a force.
People who are trying to go the right way and believe in a higher power, already have him beat however. Even though the final battle has not been played out, they still have won!
