I heard from a lot of people that cat's view their caretakers as their parents, which is why they come up to us when they need something (water changed,etc.). For all the cat lover's/owner's out there, what do you think of this??

I think they view us as part of their family. Of course we think of ourselves as their parents. Or at least my boyfriend and I do. We don't have children of our own, they are our children. We talk to them like little people. If they are hurt or sick we take them to the vet, even if we don't have the money. That is what you would do if it were a human child. It doesn't matter to me how they view us. So longs as they love us back.

I think we're more of just companions, than parents. While they're kittens, anbd have been seperated form their biological parent/s, I think we are. But, once they get older and realize what they can do on their own, I think we become more of companions. Let's face it; cats are very intelligent and recourceful. They can get by without us.

But, it could also depend on the cat and it's temperment. My cat, Sasha, for example; doesn't like being fawned over or touched by anybody but my Mother and I. Even then, she doesn't like being pet. Other cats react differently.

So, I think it depends on the creature's temperment.

I have a cat and he comes up to me when he wants to play, when he knows it is time for his wet food. ( He has a virus and I have to give him medicine twice a day and I give it with a little wet food twice a day). He comes when he wants me to hold him and pet him and when he wants attention. He is ornery. He will let me know when he is going to do something he isn't suppose to do by meowing very loudly. He wants me to come and give the bad attention too. He isn't allowed on my counters or kitchen table. He has started chewing on my chairs. I think he is part dog. The vet said it is behavioral. He has many many toys. He is definitely like a kid, that is for sure. He knows who his mother/owner is. He follows me around even when I have company.

That could explain why my cat likes me better than my husband. I always thought they viewed humans as a kind of alpha cat, like dogs do.

I have 3 cats. My cats are always around me, they sleep on the bed with me. They are either on my lap or beside me when I am on the couch. One even sits on my desk while I am working there. I think they like me and want to be with me. I sure do enjoy their company and companionship. They follow me around the house, I have to watch where I step because the is one who is always by my feet. Maybe they just like people. hum?

this is a good thing in my opinion. because every time the cat comes to you you feel happy and always know the cat loves you. i love when my cat does that.

I can see how they would. My cats always come up to me when they want more food, or litter change or water, or to play fetch. They all have different meows for each one as well and if you know your pet as well as you think you know, its easy to figure out what they want.

I don't know about them viewing us as parents, but I think cats learn that we feed them so that's why they bug us when they need food. My cats certainly know I love them, and they show their love for me when they rub on me, head butt me, and drool all over when I pet them. But I don't know about the parent thing.
