We used baby sign with both of our boys, but we began teaching them simple words at about 6 months of age. We taught them the signs for bottle, pacifier, and more. Showing him flash cards won't teach him the signs, you have to use them. When you hand him something or say something you want him to learn the sign for, you simple use the sign yourself. Baby sign language is the same as ASL. There are no tricks or different signs. Go to your library and check out a book on ASL.
But have you talked to his pediatrician about the problem? You might want to do that first as teaching him sign might prevent him from wanting to learn to talk.

Good for you! Baby sign is very important for those babies speaking and those who are not. You can opt for two different choices. Baby sign that you make up between you and your infant, or modified ASL (American Sign Language.) I believe this is best, because later on he can use this as a second language, but that is just my opinion (I am an ASL interpreter) Just remember your son is still young and may not be able to execute the signs perfectly. Allow him to be as close as he can for his age, and you can slowly correct him and continue the correction until he can sign with accuracy. There are some great websites out there. Try a google search on "baby signs." Some websites you have to pay to get info, but some will allow you to get enough to start with and then you can go from there! Good Luck and Best Wishes!
P.S. If he learns ASL now and wants to continue it through his life, he can become fluent (only when they learn before the age of 9-11 can they become completely fluent.) There is a high demand for male interpreters (especially in the medical field.) Just FYI. :)

I am not sure where on the internet you can find pictures, but I know that there is a program called board maker that you should look into. It is full of thousands of pictures which you can use for a PECs book. If you can't afford to buy this, you should contact a speech therapist (perhaps at your local school district) and they should be able to help you as they should have this program. Another option is to go to the library and photo copy pictures from a sign language book. I have a child who uses a PECs book and have found that taking my own pictures with a digital camera works awesome. You can take pictures of common objects, things he uses or wants, places you frequently go to, people he knows, or of yourself signing words. I put magnets on the back of pictures of food and drinks and put them on the fridge. I velcro other pictures to things around the house to help my son bring me what he wants since he had a hard time looking through the whole book and finding what he was looking for. I hope this helps!

Have you taken him to his doctor to have him evaluated as to why he is not talking yet? By 2 years-old they should be saying at least 20 words and starting to put two or more words together. As far as the sign language go to www.ask.com and enter your question there and it should give you a list of websites to check out.

Hello,
I am teaching my twins to sign. I was at a Mommy and Me class and a Babies R Us rep was at the meeting passing out a chart for signing with your baby,
Maybe you can go to your local Babies R Us and see if you can get a chart there.
Hope this helps you...................... :-)
