I have read many questions on this topic over and over. First spend some time on the US govt immigration site at www.uscis.gov, then learn more on www.travel.state.gov to learn more about passports visa etc.

www.ed.gov for foreign students, teachers, study abroad. etc.

So, next time you see a question on yahoo you can pass around the website i have posted above. Be kind as someone has gave you helpful info, help someone else as well.

The US hates illegal immigrants but we welcome those who have gone through the trouble our ancestors did and do the paperwork the legal way.

www.altavista.com has an online translator called babelfish in many langauges. you can cut and paste text onto the site.

ed.gov also tells how to get your foriegn educational training credential for example. teachers, doctors, lawyers and you can learn that some jobs are easier to get into the us than others.

Most legal residents don't do anything for the US, heck, I'm not even doing anything right now. Why should illegal residents pledge to do anything? That essay idea would be the most corrupt idea ever. Who would be the esteemed reviewers of these essays and how much money would it take pay them off? I'm sure they would have a price. What happens if there is a hard worker out there with no formal education? I guess he's screwed. That's not what the American dream is about. I say we should just open up the borders and have only one guage to determine how well they do, and it's how they contribute to the workforce. If they can get a job and their employer is impressed, then let them stay. I noticed below that military service is a good route, and it is. If any man or woman would make those sacrifices and do that, they are more than welcome in my country. I say we should move all the lackeys to Mexico, or Canada. Hippies, out. Drug addicts, out. Hard workers, regardless of nationality, in. Unless if your great great great grandpa kicked General Custer in the balls, we were ALL immigrants here at one point and believe it or not, we were all known for causing a stir. The mafia? Oh yeah, they were mostly newly arrived Italian immigrants. Don't even get me started about the Irish. Our ancestors worked crappy jobs for pennies and life was really really hard. They lived in slums and had to work themselves silly to get out of them. If you live in a suburb today, it's probably because one of your ancestors busted their balls to make life better for their family. We ALL spoke different languages when we came here (and some still do), but I guess we all forgot that.

The US does not actually hate illegal immigrants. What we hate are criminals and most illegals are hardened, violent criminals. That is an undeniable fact based on the crime statistics. So many crimes are done by illegals and the nature of those crimes is so violent that most of them would have to be violent criminals in order to have those stats. I mean, it's ridiculous. Places like California, for example, have almost no violent crime at all except for illegals. Instead of being one of the safest places in the US to live, it is one of the most dangerous. Unacceptable.

However, don't think that legals get off scott free. The problem with them is the number and the amount they have to offer. Immigration is not welfare under another name. The US has essentially been importing poverty, which is also an unacceptable situation. To be blunt, we allow immigrants to come here with the understanding that they become US citizens and contribute to our way of life. In return, we offer them the opportunity to become prosperous....to earn a place in society based on their efforts. But, most legal immigrants don't fall into that paradigm anymore. They used to but since the 1990's, things have changed dramatically. It's important to note this fundamental and very recent shift in who is coming here.....from people who want to be US citizens to people who want to go on welfare and send that money back to mexico. There is little intention of becoming a citizen nor any loyalty to our country. These people don't belong here.

And that's a problem because of their sheer number. It's up to about 1 million a year now. That is ten times the amount it was during the famous Great Migration of our history when immigration was considered to be overloading the system and causing social problems. There is no way in hell our country can accomadate that many people. About 100,000 a year (Great Migration numbers) is the maximum. It is not optional that we pare down legal immigration to this (still unreasonably high) number. Failure to do so will cause our economy to eventually collapse. Quite frankly, we have abused the immigration system so much, that a more realistic solution would be to drop immigration to zero for a ten year period of time or even longer to allow our social systems to recover. However, americans for the most part are extremely generous and welcome others to our country. Many, if not most would be willing to accept the problems keeping the immigration doors open. However, there are limits. We are rapidly being pushed up against those limits. This is going to become more and more obvious toward the end of the decade.
