I am assuming you are over 18 years old. If so, I think you should chat with this person online first until you feel comfortable to talk on the phone. Then, after a few phone conversations, if you feel comfortable enough to meet them in person...arrange a casual meeting in the daytime where lots of people are, like a mall or restaurant. It would also be smart to bring a friend along. If you don't want to bring anyone, at least let several people know where you're going and all the details.
If you're under 18, proceed with caution and let your parents or an older adult know.

There is one rule and one rule only about guys you meet on the internet: NEVER SET UP A TIME TO MEET THEM! You have no idea what this guy is like, he could be a 72 year old trucker for all you know, so don't meet him in person, because he might hurt you in some way. If you have a friend that has met him in person before and you trust that friend completely, then it might be ok, but otherwise DO NOT MEET THE PERSON!

I would not do it, i have heard at least 3 horror storys from friends at work about myspace. Turn off your computer and meet someone in the real world.....
If you really have to meet someone from there, bring a friend or two and meet at a very public place.....

I'm not a big fan of getting personal with people I meet online, so if you do consider it be safe. Take a friend along, meet in an open area, let people know where you are going and with whom.

Ok, Cheryl, I know you have heard this a million times, but people online are not your friends. They are 'virtual' friends. They could be anyone or anything. Don't do it unless you find a magic way to verify who he/she is (such as a police blotter!!! Then you stay away permanently). Find friends in your own hometown or school or job. This is not a real world kiddo and way too many horrible things happen. Be careful out there.

exchange phone numbers...
I would suggest using a cell phone (because it's harder to track them to an address then a land line)...
I have a phone line at my house that i use for talking to people i meet online... it's a vonage phone line... goes over my high speed internet connection... once i bought it, got it setup, i changed the address listed for me as across town:)
even if some one tries to follow it, it goes to a store front...
