It depends on what your trying to achieve . If your just trying to make a switch and you don't really care what the object is passing through it than than you can just use a laser or a proximity sensor. Any non contact sensory device is fine. These will also be more cost effective.

It is commonly done with a camera and some recognition software. The software looks for things such as size and moment of inertia to pick items from a known list of possibilities.
