This is usually taken back to the Hebrew name "Leah".

As for the meaning, the usual explanation, deriving it from a Hebrew word for "weary" is not so very certain. I say this for two reasons:

1) it seems odd -- not at all typical of Hebrew feminine names.

2) the fact that her sister's name 'Rachel" means "ewe" tends to support the suggestion that "Leah" is related to a Semitic word meaning something like "wild cow" (such a meaning is found for similar forms in the Akkadian language, for instance). Such names also fit her father's profession.

In the book " The Greatest Baby Name Book Ever" it says Lea is from the name Leah and means Weary.
Or from "Lee" and means Pasture or Meodow.

Lea is of Hawaiian origin, in their mythology, being the name of the Goddess of Canoe Makers
The Spanish form is Leah, which is of Hebrew origin, meaning "delicate; weary"

It comes from the German Leah or French Léa.
LÉA
Gender: Feminine

Usage: French

French form of LEAH

LEAH
Gender: Feminine

Usage: English, Jewish, Biblical

Pronounced: LEE-a (English) [key]

From the Hebrew name לֵאָה (Le'ah) which was probably derived from the Hebrew word לְאָה (le'ah) meaning "weary". Alternatively it might mean "mistress" or "ruler" in Assyrian. In the Old Testament she was the first wife of Jacob and the mother of seven of his children.
