OK, it's hypothetical perhaps, but if we came back (as we'd like to believe), are we destined to return in a similar image? Or does it depend on how we live our life this time round?

Here's an idea to consider.

With each lifetime the soul is exercised more and more and requires greater spiritual space to practise in to achieve ever more fulfilment. Of all creatures, humans have the most highly evolved and complex intellectual capacity which is actually a restricting factor for spiritual growth and appreciation and the more simple minded something or someone is, the more fulfilled and spiritual their existence.

Although it might seem to be that a more highly developed mind and imagination would be conducive to a potentially higher spiritual existence, the opposite is actually true, therefore, what we might consider lesser creatures in a secular sense are, in the spiritual sense, superior to humans. Humans, indeed, are on the bottom rung of the ladder as far as spirituality goes. The next step up for a soul from a human might be to something like a chimp or a dolphin or a dog or so.

Maybe insects are so spiritual they are barely aware of their secular existence at all and that's the trade off for the soul. Divine spirituality or secular intelligence. the more you have of one the less you have of the other and the evolution of the soul has the opposite ambitions of the evolution of nature.

I think it depends on how we live our life, and what specific lessons we need to learn in the next.

I tend towards thinking that most will come back as a human, if that's what they were before. But some people are so evil (like Hitler and mass murderers and people like that) that I wonder if God would let them be humans again right away, because they will just do similar damage in their next life. Perhaps they have to do penance by living for a while as some lower species. Who knows.

But in general, I tend to think that if you're human in this life, there's a good chance you'll be human in the next.

As you put it, this depends on how you live your life this time around. What becomes of you can be made clear in this manner:

"Reincarnation occurs as a karmic process analogous to the lighting of one candle from another. The two flames are not the same, but the second is a direct effect of the first, while the essential nature of fire is expressed by both."

My understanding of reincarnation is that we return if we need further lessons. We return to whatever form we need in order to learn the lesson. I think one of the best statements I have heard about reincarnation is: Not to worry about whether you believe it or not, you will return where you do or not. Sometimes we do not need to return but offer our assistance so that another can have help on their path for the goals that they have set. The idea of reincarnation answers the questions we often ask in this life time...........like why does she never seem to get punished for her crimes. She does but it might take several lifetimes in order to balance out the karma. Sometimes she agreed to do the crime in order for a lesson to be learnt by another who witness's it. When Good people seem to get bad luck it is possible that in past life times they have made some mistakes that are now being felt. At least this is my understanding on my present path.

Some believe that accumulated Karma affects how we return into our next life. That is if Karma didn't catch up with you in this lifetime.

Personally, I believe in a little bit of each: Karma and free will. If I'm a good person and enjoy my life, I will want to return as such. But if I keep thinking that "dogs have it made", maybe in my next incarnation, I would return as a dog? Since most of us don't have a memory of our past lives, it's difficult to know for sure.

I would not mind coming back as the same as I am now. 5'11
155 lbs weird, artistic, athletic, above average intelligence and good guitar playing hands. If I knew at age 10 what I know now the possibilities would be endless. SO I hope we return in a similar image. I just hope its not in Iraq or a little village sitting around on stools smoking hand rolled ciggarettes.

I have experienced events that prove to me that I am the life of the body, not the body. I lived before i had this body & i will continue to live after it is gone. Some teach transmigration, coming back as other than human, considering that life is about spiritual growth & that every thing has a personality corresponding to human charecter I tend to believe it. I believe we continue to grow,in body or not.jesus taught his deciples reincarnation.

Depends on your beliefs about reincarnation. Like some buddhists believe if you live a good life you reincarnate as a simpler form of life where its harder to judge good from evil.

But the only real answer is to wait and see,

Reincanation is a reality, The way you live your life determines how much energy you instill into the spiritual spark within your body, that gave you life, The choice of imagery is strictly up to the creation being formed at the time of your availability.
