It doesn't matter. Jesus is from God, he's only the adopted son of Joseph.

There are various explainations but possibly the most satisfactory is the one that states that Joseph was the legal son and heir of Heli, though the real son of Jacob, and so the two lines terminated in him. It was a law of the Jews that if a man died without children, his brother should marry his widow. Thus the two lines might have been intermingled.

It is also suggested that the line in Luke 3 may have been the line of Mary and not Joseph as Joseph was only the legal father and that Luke attempted to record this line because God had promised David that the Messiah would come from His line.

In Matthew the generation come thru Abraham to Joseph. Matthew 1: 16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. In Luke the generation of Jesus go all the way back thru Adam. This is the generation that has Nathan to Mary. Remember that a man could not have anything to do with the birth of Jesus because He was without sin. 2 Corinthians 5: 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Nathan...That is Mary's line.Joseph's line was cursed at Jeconiah(Coniah in some)from ever being able to take the throne, which is why we know Joseph is not his dad.(Jeremiah around chpt. 30 somewhere)
Joseph is added into Mary's line at the end of the Geneaology because he is the male(old chauvanists back then)Matthew has Joseph's line.As you'll notice the 1rst few chapters of Luke are ALL about Mary and The Birth.

They're both right. Matthew records Joseph's lineage; Luke records Mary's lineage. The reason most folks don't realize this is because of the way the Bible is translated.
