Best thing you can do is to enlist the services of a travel agent. They would be the ones to offer solutions and suggestions. The websites don't tell you options other than the most direct route.

Never mind cheap.. you would be lucky to even find available seats in Business or First class! The flights are full ! From London, Paris, Frankfurt .. almost everywhere in Europe to South America - where it's summer there!

Best for you is to travel on Christmas Day or after - then it will be cheaper. Though whether you can get any seats or not is another problem.
======================
How about 24DEC, return say 12JAN? Total = 988 quid all in? Travel on American Airlines via DFW!

Like I said, it's not about the fare anymore.. it's trying to ANY availability on any airline, in any class.

AIrline seats are coded that the cheaper ones have limited availability and the fare goes up as each booking class gets sold. For travel so close to that time of the year, you will be hard stretched to find even a full fare economy or even Business Class ticket (for people willing to fork out lots more money)...

Best of luck.

If you can fly on Dec 20th, British airways has seats in economy. £570 (including all taxes etc.).
You don't say when you want to return but if it's before New Year, you can get back for £520 on Dec 29th or 31st..
Still more than your £1000 target but you will be flying on the world's favourite airline :-).

Flight goes via GRU (Sao Paulo)

may give you some more places to check, though I have to say I've never heard of a couple of the cheaper ones, make sure they are ABTA members - Air France via Paris looks a possibilty ...
