That's why it's called alcohol because it contains.. Ethyl alcohol, and it's filtered through wood resin depending on what liquor you're dealing with., it has a similar smell to rubbing alcohol and it's flammable just like alcohol. I think that is how you make a Molotov cocktail.. you know cocktail bombs with a few other things. Now with beer and wine, it's bacteria fermented for so long with the lack of oxygen to give it that "buzz". Because all it would be is just some grape juice and a wheat grain drink....

The odour in alcohol is largely due to its flammability. One reason alcohol and gasoline are so flammable is that even when sat still a mist of vapour lies above the liquid.

This vapour makes the oxidisation (burning) easier to begin and more violent. The same vapour also hits your nose in strength.

The pungence may be related to the fact that your brain instinctively knows it is poisonous and acrid, so your nose creates a reflex to stop you inhaling it which gives you a negative opinion of it.

what peter f was referring to is the volatile gases that rise from pooled alcohol.

what type of alcohol and what kind of odor are you inquiring on?

hops make a beer bitter and give a beautiful aroma, but so do many other things it takes to make beer.
gin for example, is basically vodka filtered through a batch of juniper berries, and that where it gets its aroma.
wine, from grapes etc.....
