I have started taking horseback riding lessons, and it is actually pretty hard on you. I wanted to find some exercises that would help. I want exercises that will tone my muscles, but not build them up too much. Any suggestions?

Do some resistance training with weights or machines. And don't worry about "building too much," it's not like you'll suddenly blow up from lifting weights. Building muscle isn't easy, it takes proper training, nutrition and years. Also, it's actually a lot harder for women to build muscle because of lack of testosterone.

I would suggest really working on your legs and on your core. I would try doing some jogging, hamstring curls, lounges, and lots of sit-ups using an exercise ball. I dont know much about horseback riding but I think that strengthening your core muscles would be the best way to go.

If you'd like to start slowly, you might want to begin by going about your daily routine (except for the horseback riding) with small ankle weights on your ankles. I think there are also wrist weights, and they probably fasten with velcro. The sporting goods section of a mass merchandiser would probably have them in stock.

Make small, gradual changes and over time, they will have an extremely powerful effect on you.

Check out http://www.obesitykills.iconfessional.com . The guy there is an ex-Marine, like myself, and he's putting together a program for himself in his blog that will get him back into shape. It will work for pretty much anyone and he's doing it all publically.

He's not selling anything, just sharing what he's doing as he does it. He's hoping for encouragement and motivation from his readers.

Hope that helps.
