Yes! ALL medical professions are sworn to keep a patients information confidential. They may discuss a patients case, or a particular incident, but they can only do so for informational an educations purposes, and can NEVER use a patients name, dates, or anything else that might let others know what patient they are referring to. For example: A physical therapist is working with a patient whose gait needs improvement. They find that a certain exercise worked well for the specific condition. They may explain what the exercise was, how it was done, and what kind of response the patient had. What they can't do is say, "I was working with (insert name here)..." or "My appointment at 10:30 Friday morning..", because that would allow others to know what patient specifically. It could cost them both the job and/or license.

The only exception to the confidentiality rule is if child abuse, elder abuse is involoved or you say you are going to hurt yourself or someone else. They are then mandated by law to tell someone. Also if they are supeoned to court, they have to tell..other than that things are suppose to be condfidential. If you go for counseling, they will tell you what to expect and under what circumstances they are obligated to tell others. However I know for sure that the ones I listed are the exceptions.

My psychologist also told me once that under certain circumstances that I don't recall your insurance company can be allowed to read any notes that he keeps about me or any other patient. For this reason he writes notes in code. I believe also if you are going to commit a crime they can tell the police, although mine hasn't turned me in for anything I've told him about.

my therapist does not say anything to anyone unless i say its ok. it's totally confedental ...yes if you are sucidial or wanting to hurt someone else they have to by law tell someone so you won't do something. does that make sense? i had mine almost call the cops on me for having thoughts that wasn't so nice, but i know he has to do whats right.

If you say your going to kill yourself or kill or hurt somebody they would probably feel obligated by their medical oath to tell somebody about it...
