Is it to learn how to Kick Some A$$???

or

Is it to really hop skip around in front of a Large Audience and bang sticks with each other like Star Wars ???

or

the politically correct, "I want to learn how to Defend myself?"

Or

Be Like Bruce Lee, Van Damme, Jet Li, or whomever??

Actually, all of the things on your list are reasons that some people have have given for taking up the study of the martial arts. Some also do it because it is part of their cultural, ancestral heritage. Others, simply for the health and fitness benefits. Some are "forced" into it as children by their parents. And some, because they were born to it, it was a destiny that they had no choice but to follow....

So there are lots of reasons people take up the martial arts...and no reason is really any more valid than any other...although some will lead to a more dedicated pursuit of those arts.

I take Martial Arts becuase i always thought it looked awesome! So i gues that goes under being like Bruce Lee or Jet Li. But I really commitede to taking Martial Arts when I needed to loose some weight. I also love the plus of self defence. But it's also great that I can kick butt!

that question is different for each individual. some say they want to gain confidence. women claim to want to learn self defence. others are to lose weight, to gain self esteem, to be just like Bruce lee or jet lee. but the reason is not important its what you get out of training in the martial arts. in the community, the respect, the joy of seeing a kids face when they break a board for the first time or ac hive a goal they set themselves. that's why we keep doing martial arts why we started doesn't seem to come into it has there are as many reasons to start has there are martial arts.

Respect... Ever since I become a Muay Thai fighter, not many dare to disrespect me.

but once again I'm the bad guy on this forum because I'm one of few people who know that there's serious problem with martial arts becoming so commericalized. So I'm not afaird to say what is bullsh!t and what's not and I don't encourage others to pretend to be a asian.

So don't be surprise if everyone say I'm learning for wrong reason. They'll say that because they're intimidated by the fact that they wasted all years on something worthless while I busted my a55 to get to where I'm right now.

Self-defense

There may be as many reasons as there are people studying MA. There are certainly those who want to kick ***, I at least hope they are a very small minority.
Others, mostly kids think they'll be able to emulate power rangers & ninja turtles.
I startes with my son & it has become part of my life. I haven't ever needed it for self defense, but it's nice to know it's there.

I do it for fun, fitness, your first choice and because I love the thrill of possibly being injured but also possibly bashing the f**k out of someone.

Eg the other day two things happened:
1 My nose got fractured which was a negative
2 I nearly knocked someone out which was a positive

some people watch the movies with people flying everywhere. they want to learn because they want to feel cool like the see and think it is in the movies. other times it is for self defense or some people just like being able to say. "watch your mouth i can kick your a$$. it just depends... but if you ask people you will hear "cause its cool." alot.

it's really up to the individual and what he or she wants to get out of whichever discipline they wish to learn.

some people learn it for self defense, others learn it to broaden themselves spiritually or physically.

and others learn it to make a name for themselves in competition, while some learn it just for the fun of it.
