points stay on licence for 4 years now,but you can apply up to 1 year before end of this time to the court to have them removed, but you need to have a really good excuse/reason for this!

Speeding fines usually come off your license after three years, but you have to send off your license to get the points removed. however this is when you get a set of 3 points. there may be an extension on the time before you get them cleared if its 10 points in a one go. Your best bet is to get in contact with the DVLA as they deal with licenses and will probably know more than me.
Hope thats helpful!

Nice try, but nonsense. If you were convicted of "Being in charge of a car while unfit to drive" you were, in the eyes of the law, driving.

According to DVLA website - www.dvla.gov.uk - DR50 only stays on your license for 4 years, BUT you should e-mail and ask them for the definitive answer, as the website is not 100% clear on this.

sounds to me like you had a provisional license holder under your instruction when you were stopped
if you were under the influence of drink and or drugs then more fool you YOU were in charge of the car even though you were not driving pity they did not take away your license completely

That sounds very unfair. If you were in your wife's car driving her to the hospital to have a baby, could she be arrested for being "being in charge of a car while unfit to drive?"

You don't have to be driving the vehicle to be unfit to be in charge of it. There's nothing to be proud of in having ten points and in my opinion you should be made to re-take your test. In answer to your question it's three years I believe - should be life.
