Look at the under side of the nail.
You should see a v growing from the paw towards the tip of the nail. Trim only to the outer point of that v. Most times you should not hit vein unless you tip the clipper forward or up towards the paw.
The v is where the vein runs in the claw.
I do this on my black nailed dogs. I very rarely get one that bleeds.
Get some of the quick stop or stypetic powder and keep it handy when trimming nails just in case.

It's perfectly fine to trim your puppies nails. You want to watch out because there are nerves that run through the puppy's nails (The quick). Put the puppy in down and roll him over to back. Give him lots of belly rubbins. Don't get him to riled up or you won't be able to keep him there. Once he's relaxed play with his paws a bit. You want him to get used to it. Some dogs HATE having thier feet touched. Play with his paws, and take your time to examine where the nerve is. If he has white nails you'll be able to see it pretty easily. If not just trim the tip of the nail. If you happen to snip the nerve put some baking flour on it to stop the bleeding. You won't need much. When you're finished make sure to give him a special treat. I groom my girls every day (brushing) Nail trim time comes and even though they are anxious the trust is there. They lay down and roll over themselves because they know when the deed is done they get cheese! LOL Good Luck

OK hunn The best thing to do is just don't trim to far down the vein is just a little below the middle of the nail..trim the tip of the nail and just file it down a little not to much you don't want her to bleed but if you ever do hit the vein put a cloth towel on it with pressure and take her to the vet right away they got stuff to stop the bleeding ....hope that helped..~*GOOD LUCK*~

You're on the right track with using a lot of lighting. Try using the dog nail clippers with guard set, have some corn starch handy just in case you cut the nail to the quick, it'll help stop any bleeding.

Black nails are hard to do. I am too worried about nipping the quick and take mine in to have them done.

But I have done my other dogs nails on occasion (white) and the vet suggested to keep a little dish of cornstarch near by just in case. If you do nip the quick and get a bleeder, dip the tip of the nail into the cornstarch and it will stop the bleeding and help the blood clot.

My dog has black nails... they are a royal pain to cut. There is a little indention on the bottom of the nail, kinda depressed then the nail comes to a point. I cut a little bit behind that (where it ends). I have only nicked her 2x, and she is 3 years old. Good luck!

If you are using dog nail clippers set the guard on and just go 1/4 inch back; if you are using human nail clippers you can just clip them back as far as the nail will fit under the clipper (or if they are an extremely small puppy just clip the tips off).

You're on the right track. Black nails are tricky and require practice, but you'll soon get it. When cutting nails, shine a flashlight through, so you can see the quick. After that you need to go by memory.

Use a flashlight in a dim room even the darker nails will be translucent(Some light will travel through) You can see the "Quick" that way.
