Just think how much more smooth your skin will look and how much more young and beautiful you'll become when you give up smoking. Will power is the most important factor in this. You have to come to realize that you are doing it for yourself and you are doing it because you love yourself and you want to look after your health. Smoking is a kind of chronical self-harm. If you love yourself, then you don't want to harm yourself or contaminate your body with tobacco. Tell yourself what a wonderful person you are and because of that, you're not going to allow tobacco to harm your health. It will work, trust me!

quit smoking 1 year and 4 months ago (wow- I can't believe it's been that long) after 25 years of smoking. I have to tell you it was certainly the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life. I had tried at least a dozen times before, but somehow this time it stuck!

The first thing is you have to want to do it for YOU and only YOU! I also had a challenge with 2 other friends about quitting. They both thought it was going to be harder for me- so each time they smoked, it encouraged me more to keep on going.

I never kept any "emergency" smokes around the house and if it got real bad- I'd go by a pack- sit on the floor and CRY! I'd cry and cry until I finally got up and threw them away. I decided I had to be stronger then the cigarettes!

I also used the patch- exactly according to details and didn't falter from the plan.

Some people use support groups on line. I ddn't care for that because I found it had me thinking about smoking more then I wanted to.

I think it took about 3 months (post patch) to get past the crying and longing. It took another 6 months before I could finally say- I'll never smoke again. When you are going through it, it seems like your life is all blurry and fuzzy and that you will never feel right again. But, it does get better!

Good luck on your quit!

The best advice I can give is for you to contact your local Smoking cessation clinic, I did it and it has worked for me.

It lasts seven weeks and for the first two you talk about why you want to quit what help(Patches, Gum, lozenges, Ziban etc) is best for you and you build up relationships with other like minded people.

Week three is quit day and you make a pledge not to smoke and make a bet that you will(The money that you bet is spent on a party on the last day) and stop smoking and start on your nicotine replacement therapy, also you will be given a "Buddy"(one of the group) to phone regularly to see how things are going or talk about problems.

The next four weeks your breathe is measured for Carbon monoxide(to tell if you've been smoking) and talking about how you feel.

At the end you get a party(non-smoking of cause) and all congratulate each other for succeeding.

Try it it worked for me and it can for you!.

I wish you all the best but don't feel too bad if you fail again as it's very difficult to beat it but IT CAN BE DONE!!

Once again GOOD LUCK my thoughts are with you!!

I have given up after 23 years of smoking. You definately need a lot of willpower and I think that using one of the aids (eg patches) is really helpfull. If you want to give up smoking you will probably eat a bit more but you can always lose the weight when you don't feel so vulnerable to everything. Instead of screaming at everyone just take a couple of deep breaths and count to ten . Don't put yourself in situations where it would be easy for you to take up smoking again. Believe me, you will feel SOOO much better about yourself and as everyday passes that you haven't smoked be proud of yourself. Let people around you know that you are giving up and that you might be a bit moody for a couple of weeks, (it's like PMT). GOOD LUCK

I was smoking 40 a day. But gave up one Easter. On the Good Friday I smoked 120 cigarettes, but only smoked the first 1/4 of each of them and stubbed them out into a large metal tray in my front room.

On the Saturday, I said to myself that I could smoke all I wanted - from the tray. I smoked them - but only another 1/4.

On the Sunday, I said to myself that I could smoke all I wanted - from the tray. I smoked most of them - but only another 1/4.

On the Monday, I smoked another 1/8 leaving the butts.

On Tuesday morning I tried smoking the butts again but was violently sick whenever I tried smoking them.

On the Wednesday I could not face the tray so put it behind me on the sideboard. Stayed in and drank some beer watching TV.

On the Thursday I did not want a cigarette. I have not smoked now for 20 years.

Try to drop down to smoking half a cigarette at a time and try to wait a few minutes when you have your next urge to light up. Also try to keep track of the number of cigarettes you smoke per day so you can measure your progress.

It's probably illegal, but someone once suggested keeping a large supply of one-dollar bills and burning one for each cigarette smoked. Maybe there's a way to do that legally, though, like leaving four quarters somewhere in public where they won't do any harm for each time you smoke.

If you really want to do it you will do it. Have a goal in view for me it was deciding that the next time I flew I wouldn't be a smoker and it worked. I had smoked for 15 years and managed to do it without any artificial aids (I was afraid of becoming dependent on the substitute) I have to admit I put on weight but a sensible diet and extra swimming is sorting that out. All the best!

Ok you should try asking your doctor. Or try hiding your cigarettes for a while or replace smoking with something. Your doctor will give you better advice than me. Good luck and that's good you tryin to stop. My parents just won't. The next time you pick up a cigerette remember that your digging yourself an early grave.
