He had three doctorate degrees (Philosophy, Theology, and Medicine). In theology, his work is known for historical studies of the New Testament. His work in philosophy, involved Neitzsche and St. Francis of Assisi into an ethical stance on respect for life. His work in medicine took him to Africa, treating thousands of people, many with leprosy. He also was an accomplished organist and became a well known interpreter of Bach by reassessing the composers religious intentions. CD's of his performances are still available.
