Checks a disk and displays a status report.
CHKDSK [volume[[path]filename]]] [/F] [/V] [/R] [/X] [/I] [/C] [/L[:size]]
volume - Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name.
filename
FAT only: Specifies the files to check for fragmentation.
/F Fixes errors on the disk.
/V On FAT/FAT32: Displays the full path and name of every file on the disk.
On NTFS: Displays cleanup messages if any.
/R Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F).
/L:size NTFS only: Changes the log file size to the specified number of kilobytes. If size is not specified, displays current size.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid (implies /F).
/I NTFS only: Performs a less vigorous check of index entries.
/C NTFS only: Skips checking of cycles within the folder structure.
The /I or /C switch reduces the amount of time required to run Chkdsk by skipping certain checks of the volume.

Using CHKDSK /f
The steps for using CHKDSK /f are:
1. Insert the MS OS/2 Install disk into drive A and turn on your machine, or, if it is already on, restart it by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
2. At the first screen, press ESC to go to the command prompt.
3. Insert the disk that contains the CHKDSK.COM FILE into drive A.
4. Type CHKDSK C: /f:3 and press ENTER.

Proceeding Without START-UP
Step 3 directs you to insert the START-UP disk, which contains CHKDSK.COM. This disk was created when you installed OS/2. If you can't find it, there are two ways to get around the problem:
• At step 3 insert the MICROSOFT OS/2 DISK 1 and proceed. - or -
• Copy CHKDSK.COM and UHPFS.DLL from the C:\OS2 directory to a floppy disk and insert it at step 3.

Errors Caused by Absence of UHPFS.DLL
If the disk used in Step 3 does not contain CHKDSK.COM and UHPFS.DLL, you can receive numerous errors. If it has only CHKDSK.COM, you receive:

Be sure to put a space between chkdsk and /f. From your question, it looks like you left the space out.

this is only for checking the disc for errors when you run this it cannot perform the task straight away you have to reboot the computer and do nothing when it comes back on again it should show you a screen saying it is about to check the disc do not press any keys or you will stop the process
