No, you don't have to upgrade if you don't want to. There are people still using Windows 98. I dno't recommend 98 to anyone, but XP will still do the job for years to come.

I would only advise upgrading 6months-1 yr after the release of Vista. By that time a lot of the bugs would have been worked out when they release Service pack one or even 2.

In theory, Vista should offer better security and cooler graphics. But you should know that the first release of vista will be slower for games when compared with XP.

Cost wise, if you buy vista, you will also need newer application software to take advantage of the new features. So for software alone, you could be paying something like 600usd(for windows and the new office), not to mention any hardware upgrades.

Finally, if you plan to upgrade you hardware, you should know that computer prices are going down around 10% every 2-3 months. At the same time the specs are going up. So I would say that next summer will be a very hot summer and by then the machines will come with vista pre-installed(unless you buy a Mac which can also probably run vista)

2006/09/06

Microsoft has announced pricing for the five (whew) different versions of Windows Vista. Starting at what seems to be an affordable hundred smackers for the "Basic" upgrade, the cost zooms up to $399 for the full "Ultimate" edition. Here's the nitty gritty:
Windows Vista Home Basic: $99 upgrade, $199 full
Windows Vista Home Premium: $159 upgrade, $239 full
Windows Vista Business: $199 upgrade, $299 full
Windows Vista Ultimate: $259 upgrade, $399 full
Windows Vista Enterprise: Volume licenses only
Check out Microsoft's web site for more details on what each version does. According to our friends in Redmond, there's a version to fit your needs and your PC.

You do not have to but I know so much about computers and I love messing around with them I am going to upgrade.Micrsoft claims that it is better for commercial A.K.A. business or somthing like that. It supports new hardware and drivers for later use. Like for example: The Microsoft Windows 98 does not support the drivers for flash drives or wireless networks but, Windows XP has those drivers. It is totally your choice I would say yes but not right awa, wait until the price comes down and becomes more affordable. It is not needed now but I reccomend it later in life as new things come out such as blue-ray and many more. Ther is a lot to do though if you want to upgrade operating systems such as, clearing the hard drive. That would be the best way. I hope this helps and if you have anymore questions about anything just im me on Aol Instant Messenger at Dunekiller555.

Yes you can upgrade if you purhcase. Microsoft "Vista:, is an entire new platform that is not given to you an a free update from Windows XP Prof.,

I have read at http://www.zdnet.com that Microsoft has decided to hike the prices up when "Vista", hits the market. No one actually really knows the exact price, but you will be looking at anywhere from $250.00 to well over $500.00 for this platform when it comes out.

Plus the experts really don't have much of anything good to say about this platform.

You know Microsoft, all of their platforms have been pure junk with the exception of Windows 2000 Server NT Technology. This platform was excellent, because it was designed for Microsoft out of Australia, instead of their Redmond, Washington headquarters.

Ofcourse they no longer support this platform or just about anything below Windows XP platforms with SP2.

Must you upgrade to Vista? No, you can continue using Windows XP. However, there are some pretty cool new features. (For the record, I am currently beta testing Vista, so all of my knowledge is first hand.)

First of all, Microsoft has done some work on improving the security of your computer. A new feature called User Account Control requires you to confirm actions that could affect your computer. (For example, installing software.) It features built in spyware protection via Windows Defender. (Though Windows Defender can also be added to XP.)

The eye candy is pretty nice too.
